north kingstown police accuse a man of extorting more than $20 thousand from his elderly mother by repeatedly threatening to kidnap her cat and demanding ransom. garry lamar was arrested last week and released on $200 bail. he’s been ordered to stay away from his 78-year-old mother, mary lamar grancher. police say he started threatening to kidnap his mother’s beloved pet just over a year ago, when she kicked him out of her home. according to authorities, lamar allegedly kidnapped the cat once during the past year and made kidnapping threats on a near weekly basis. police don’t believe the cat was harmed, but they’re still investigating. police say grancher made at least two dozen payments. a phone listing for lamar couldn’t be located. source: bostonherald.com
in a situation reminiscent of norman bates and the old alfred hitchcock movie “psycho”, a southern indian man housed the preserved corpse of his dead mother in his home for 20 years until his death last week.
syed abdul gafoor, a professor of english literature, had the body of his mother embalmed upon death and placed the unrotting corpse on display in his home in the state of andhra pradesh in 1985.
it seems then the eccentric professor kept the embalmed body in a glass case in one room of his ancestral family home while he lived in another. to make weird things weirder, family members reported how extremely protective he was of his dead mother.
“he was so eccentric that he would not allow anybody to even look at the glass casket in which the body was kept.” said syed noor, the nephew of the nutty professor.
the case only gets stranger. "before doing anything important, he would write 'yes' or 'no' on two pieces of paper. then sitting near the embalmed body, he would draw lots and decide." stated the distraught nephew.
a local said neighbors were not happy about the corpse hording. "there were several protests. but he remained adamant that the body would remain with him till his last breath," said local revenue officer m prabhakar reddy.
mr. gafoor had degrees in english literature from cambridge and madras university’s, and was the head of the department at a college in tamil nadu, until he took voluntary retirement in 1987 so that he would not have to spend so much time away from his mother's body.
despite his preoccupation with his mothers’ body, neighbors were quoted as saying mr. gafoor was a "highly respected man of letters".

"she was on her back and [the cougar] had his paws on her head, and i just knew i had to react quick. "so i just jumped in there and wedged myself between the cougar and her on the ground. "[then] i just got up and threw it off my back and grabbed maya and ran." maya suffered puncture wounds to her left arm and head, but was reportedly recovering well. the same could not be said for the cougar, an adult male, which was tracked down and killed by conservation officers on tuesday night, local media reported. source

a woman turned up to a school in sweden on monday armed with an axe and a crowbar, reportedly to defend her bullied son. the woman entered the playground at osbeck gymnasium school in laholm, southern sweden, following a call from her son. he had been subjected to taunts by some of his classmates. exactly what caused the argument is not yet clear. by the time police arrived at the scene the mother had disappeared. police were trying to track her down on monday afternoon, saying they wished to interview her about the incident. pupils and witnesses will also be questioned. the school said it planned to hold a press conference on monday afternoon. source: thelocal.se
