in tasmania, two miners have been trapped in a steel cage for over a week. although efforts to rescue the two have not been successful yet, hopes are high.
on april 25th, after an earthquake, a rock fall trapped two miners and killed one. it was only discovered on sunday that the two workers, brant webb and todd russell, were still alive. rescue workers have been working since to get the two trapped miners up to the surface.
last monday, the rescue workers managed to get an access pipe through to them and supplied the men with food and water, blankets, glow sticks and magazines. the miners now have been given ipod’s to while away the time until they are finally released from their steel cage trap.
concrete was poured to serve as a foundation for a raise borer, which will be used to drill toward mine workers. drilling, according to the beaconsfield gold mine, will start later today. it is thought that it will take two days to reach the miners.
prime minister john howard has expressed his support to the miners, their families and the community of beaconsfield, and has said that he was impressed with the way the community had pulled together to rescue the men.
both men are still in good health and spirits, after having received personal items and messages from their families.
the two australian miners trapped in the tasmanian beaconsfield gold mine won’t be rescued until sunday.
rescue workers have drilled through 40 feet of solid rock, but the last few feet will have to be dug by hand, to ensure that vibrations caused by the digging will not cause another cave-in, officials said.
it looks like the two will spend another night underground, which will be the twelfth since the earthquake that cause the cave-in, trapping them and killing their colleague larry knight.
the two miners spend last evening preparing for their rescue, stabilizing the rock around them with grout, to minimize the chance of another rock fall when workers on the other side will finally break through.
according to a paramedic, the two are still in good health and have not lost their sense of humor.
the two expect to be freed soon and have packed a bag of their belongings in anticipation of their rescue.
