wellington, new zealand — a grandmother was alarmed to find a condom in a happy meal gift pack bought for her 7-year-old granddaughter at a mcdonald's (mcd) restaurant in new zealand, local media reported thursday. the condom was discovered tuesday night in a bag that came with maia whitaker's meal, which her grandparents bought at a mcdonald's outlet in the city of wellington. grandpa rowan hutch told the dominion post newspaper it was lucky his wife was first to look inside the small sports bag that came with the meal. she was aghast when she found the green condom and its packet inside the bag, he said. "i was pretty horrified really. the fact my granddaughter was going to look in the bag and find this thing. it would be difficult to explain, she's only seven," said hutch. the outlet quickly swapped the happy meal for a hamburger and pencil case. mcdonald's is investigating the find. spokeswoman joanna redfern-hardisty said because of its popularity, the previous happy meal gift had sold out at the outlet and prepackaged sports bags were substituted as children's gifts. one was left unsealed for display purposes and "somehow" had ended up with the customer, she said, without explaining why the condom was present. source
la. police say a homeless man broke into a woman's home to cook a meal. alexandria police have arrested a man they said broke into an home to cook a meal. the alexandria daily town talk reported wednesday that 29-year-old man, who told police he was homeless, was arrested and charged with burglary. a woman told police she walked into her home around 5:30 p.m. sunday to find a man inside. she said she asked the man what he was doing, and he told her it was his aunt's home and that she was not to be there. the man told the woman that his aunt told him he could come by anytime he wanted. when police arrived, officers discovered that the oven and a heater were on and that the man had been cooking and eating the woman's food. source
hong kong - an indonesian maid was in a hong kong jail thursday awaiting trial for mixing her menstrual blood in a pot of vegetables she was cooking for her employer. indra ningsih, 26, allegedly told police afterwards she mixed the blood into the meal in a superstitious effort to make her chinese employer "more amiable and less picky" towards her. the maid was arrested tuesday and charged at a hearing wednesday with administering a poison or other noxious substance with an intent to injure. she was remanded in custody until may 13. ningsih was arrested after her employer peered through the kitchen door and saw her acting suspiciously as she cooked vegetables for lunch. when the employer checked, she found a blood clot-like substance mixed with the vegetables and a used sanitary napkin in the kitchen bin, according to a report in the hong kong standard newspaper. prosecutors said that ningsih told police her employer had been unhappy with her performance since hiring her last july and constantly scolded her. she told police she mixed the blood with the food because she believed it would improve their relationship and make her employer kinder to her, according to prosecutors. in 2008, a court in saudi arabia jailed two maids from indonesia and the philippines for four months and sentenced them to 250 lashes each for putting urine and menstrual blood in their employer's tea. another indonesian maid in hong kong was jailed for three months in 2007 after being convicted of adding urine to the drinking water of her employer, believing it would make the family treat her better. more than 200,000 women from the philippines, indonesia and thailand work as live-in maids for families in hong kong, doing housework and child care duties for a government-set minimum wage of around 450 us dollars a month. source, source this is the fiercest news i've ever heard since 2003.
"unhappy meals" featuring a knife-wielding ronald mcdonald and bloody rubber chickens are upsetting parents who say the people for the ethical treatment of animals are unfairly targeting their kids at mcdonald's restaurants across the country. peta's "mccruelty campaign" has ruffled the feathers of moms and dads in albany who say they don't want their kids exposed to any throat-slitting chickens or pictures of slaughtered poultry. "i don't want my son to be around something like this. this is not fair for a child," stephaine gipson told fox23 news in albany. "i think it's unhappy that they target children," said parent michelle natale. but the animal rights activists say kids are jaded enough by television and video games to handle the carnographic images, and intend to continue their campaign pressuring mcdonald's to use more humane means of killing chickens. "i think children and adults deserve to be told the truth — and that's that behind ronald mcdonald's smile is cruelty to animals," said peta spokeswoman lindsay rajt. rajt said most parents are usually troubled by what peta calls mcdonald's cruel treatment of chickens, and said that kids who "naturally empathize" with animals enjoy peta's presence outside the golden arches. "kids are usually very excited to see the free t-shirts and they like our person in the chicken constume," rajt said, referring either to the furry, friendly chick that visits some chains, or the full-grown fowl with murder in its eyes. a representative for mcdonald's defended the franchise, saying it supports the use of a stunning technique that numbs its chickens before they are slaughtered.
