a proposal of a new amendment to the constitution reads “marriage in the united states shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.”
yesterday, the senate panel approved the amendment by 10-8 votes, which means it will now be send on to the senate.
the vote in the senate panel ended in a shouting match between republican chairman senator arlen specter and democratic member of the panel, senator russ feingold.
since 2003, when a massachusetts' court ruled that state legislature could not ban gay marriage, it has been a hot topic. since then, 13 states have banned same sex marriages, while two have legalized civil unions.
the new amendment stands little chance to make it though, two-thirds of congress and three-fourths of the states need to vote for the proposal. only about half of us citizens believe same sex marriage to be wrong.
many democrats allege that the amendment is merely a means to appeal to the voters come midterm elections, diverting attention away from the scandals the bush administration is facing at the moment, regarding wiretapping and the judicial nominees.
the vote is schedule for the june 5th.
