leaking sewage from blocked toilets at waikato hospital has been showering nurses.
the hospital has taken action to stop human waste from overflowing toilets dripping on nurses at the henry bennett centre and in the intensive care unit (icu) in the main building. new zealand nursing organisation spokeswoman jenny dorian said there had been a history of leaks in the henry bennett centre – a mental health facility at the hospital. there had also been cases of leaks affecting the icu.
human excrement had leaked on people working on lower floors after toilets had been blocked. "i understand that these things happen and we have been assured by (hospital) management that they are sorting it out," ms dorian said.
"while we were told the leak in icu was a broken pipe which saw grey water leaking, the leak in henry bennett definitely contained excrement." hospital spokeswoman karen bennett said the hospital had repeatedly faced problems with blocked pipes overflowing into the two areas.
henry bennett centre staff have reported 10 incidents since january 2003 while in icu there have been four leaks, the most recent on july 17. reports variously describe the overflow as effluent, sewage, waste water, dirty water and grey water (water from showers etc).
"whichever way the incidents are described, they are unacceptable and have the potential to harm people's health," said ms bennett. ms bennett said the blockages were largely caused by people forcing objects into toilets including towels, bed sheets, toilet rolls and other objects.
the health board has also sealed a number of areas and laid leak-proof flooring so overflows can not get through to lower floors. ms bennett said some equipment had had to be decontaminated. she said patients had never been at risk as the incidents happened in areas where there were no beds.
thats just nasty.

this is the leaked promo trailer for the movie 300, based on the graphic novel of frank miller, creator of sin city.
trailer to the new movie. part 2
last year, sensitive intelligence regarding iraq was leaked to the press. president bush has maintained his innocence regarding this leak, but now it seems the cat is out of the bag.
it all started with an op-ed piece in the new york times, written by joseph wilson, a former diplomat who went to africa on a cia-sanctioned mission to determine whether saddam hussein was seeking to buy yellow cake uranium from niger. he stated that the claim by the bush administration was false.
subsequently, the identity of ex-cia operative valerie plame was leaked to the press, who happened to be married to mr. wilson. although president bush apparently was not involved in this particular leak, scooter libby, who now stands trial for leaking this information, has revealed that bush did authorize the leaking of other sensitive intelligence about iraq.
reportedly, bush authorized libby to leak information from the national intelligence estimate on iraq in the summer of 2003, most notably the assertion that iraq had wmds.
legal scholars believe that it was not illegal for bush to declassify aforementioned information, since the president has the "inherent authority to decide who should have classified information," as us attorney general alberto gonzales said.
however, in light of his words of 2003, “if there is a leak out of my administration, i want to know who it is,” this seems to be yet another embarrassing situation for bush.
yesterday, at johns hopkins university's school of advanced international studies in washington, bush answered questions by students pertaining to the leak.
he said that people were questioning the basis on which the us invaded iraq and that he sought to answer those questions. he wanted people to see the truth.
cheney apparently handed national intelligence estimate documents to libby, telling him that the president approved the disclosure to the press. reporter judith miller, contacted by libby, subsequently wrote an article in the new york post detailing the reasons for the iraq war. these reasons, as it turned out, were based on forged and incomplete documents.
although white house officials are reluctant to answer any questions about the leak, because the investigation is still ongoing, president bush has now openly admitted himself that he authorized the disclosure of the nie report.
begs the question, why leak it, why not use the standard protocol to declassify parts of the nie report on iraq publicly?
president bush has come under heavy criticism for authorizing a leak to the press.
the leak, detailing classified information about the national intelligence estimate report on iraq, was presumably used to strengthen the president's political position.
although scholars agree that the president has the authority to release previously classified information, many feel that is was merely an attempt to justify the ill advised war on iraq.
last friday, in the washington post, an anonymous official was quoted as saying: “bush authorized the release of the classified information to assure the public of his rationale for war as it was coming under increasing scrutiny.”
“there were irresponsible and unfounded accusations being made against the administration, suggesting that we had manipulated or misused that intelligence… we felt it was very much in the public interest that what information could be declassified, be declassified. and that's exactly what we did,” bush's spokesman, scott mcclellan said.
he also said there was a distinction in declassifying information in the publics best interest and leaking information that could be a threat to national security.
“now, there are democrats out there that fail to recognize that distinction or refuse to recognize that distinction. they are simply engaging in crass politics.”
bush himself has been very outspoken on leaks, “i'd like to know if somebody in my white house did leak sensitive information.”
ah, the irony. or is it forgetfulness?
leaking seems to be the in-thing at the moment. now a cia officer has been fired due to leaking secret information to the washington post.
the article in the washington post reported about the secret cia prisons for terrorism suspects and won a pulitzer prize.
not only did the article cause a major uproar in the us, european nations have ordered in depth investigation into the allegation. it has severely damaged relations with several european nations who now will not allow cia flights to take off from their airports
an investigation was launched, focusing on intelligence officers who were involved or exposed to this intelligence.
cia spokesman tom crispell said in an official statement, “during the course of these investigations, the cia officer acknowledged having unauthorized discussions with members of the media in which the officer knowingly and willfully shared classified intelligence, including operational information.”
the officer was fired immediately, for violating the secrecy agreement that everyone signs as a condition of employment with the cia.
on a day when much of the capital's attention was focused on leaked excerpts of an intelligence estimate report that suggested the iraq war was creating more jihadists, the military quietly released an intercepted letter from al qaeda complaining that the terrorist organization was losing ground in iraq.
the letter, found in the headquarters of al qaeda's leader in iraq, abu-musab al-zarqawi, after he was killed on june 7, was sent to zarqawi by a senior al qaeda leader who signs his name simply "atiyah." he complains that al qaeda is weak both in the afghanistan-pakistan border region and in iraq.
