british officials will demand an explanation from the iranian charge d'affaires in london today over "sickening" comments made by president mahmoud ahmadinejad of iran, who has called for israel to be "wiped off the map".
mr ahmadinejad, who defends his country's "inalienable right" to nuclear power and has called for a global islamic revolution, sparked an international furor last night after iranian state television reported a speech he made at a conference in tehran called "the world without zionism."
reverting to the vitriol of ayatollah khomeini, leader of the iranian revolution, mr ahmadinejad urged the destruction of israel by palestinian militants: "there is no doubt that the new wave in palestine will soon wipe off this disgraceful blot from the face of the islamic world," he said. "as the imam (khomeini) said, israel must be wiped off the map."
mr ahmadinejad also warned fellow islamic leaders against softening their stance against the "zionist regime". last month, bahrain announced that it would resume trade with israel.
"anybody who recognizes israel will burn in the fire of the islamic nation’s fury. anybody who recognizes the zionist regime is acknowledging the surrender and defeat of the islamic world," mr ahmadinejad is reported to have said.

death row inmate stanley "tookie" williams, 51, is the focus of california's fiercest battle over capital punishment since the state reinstated the penalty in 1977.
with a dec. 13 execution date looming, supporters of williams, including rapper snoop dogg, are stepping up protests. los angeles county district attorney steve cooley calls the prisoner a "cold-blooded killer" who has "steadfastly refused to take any responsibility" for his crimes.
among williams' other supporters are mike farrell of the m*a*s*h television series and actor jamie foxx, who portrayed williams last year in a made-for-tv movie. snoop dogg, a former member of the crips in long beach, calif., spoke at a weekend rally of 1,000 death penalty opponents outside san quentin state prison. jesse jackson and celebrity activist bianca jagger visited williams on monday.
williams was convicted in 1981 of murdering four people during two robberies in 1979. he lost his final supreme court appeal in october. his hopes of avoiding lethal injection at san quentin rest almost entirely on a petition to schwarzenegger to commute his sentence to life behind bars without parole.

an italian lap dancer turned nun is to perform a religious dance in front of an audience of roman catholic cardinals and bishops. anna nobili, 38, spent years working as an exotic dancer and striptease artist in night clubs in milan. but she swapped string bikinis and high heels for a nun's habit after a visit to the shrine of st francis in assisi, a place of pilgrimage for millions of catholics in umbria, in 2002. sister nobili, as she became, joined an order of nuns called the sister workers of the holy house of nazareth. she claims to have been reborn by her faith in god and practises a form of "mystical" choreography which she calls "holy dance". she is due to perform in front of senior catholic clerics next week at the holy cross in jerusalem basilica, one of rome's best known churches. the performance, based on stories from the old and new testaments, will be called: "the bible: day and night". among the guests expected to attend will be archbishop gianfranco ravasi, who is in charge of the vatican's cultural department. sister nobili, who now calls herself a "ballerina for god", said: "i was wasting my life dancing for men in clubs. the nights were filled with sex and alcohol. it was an empty life but i liked it because i was the center of attention. a cult leader in papua new guinea fled naked into the jungle after being confronted by police over allegations that he'd forced followers to have sex in public, with the promise that it would boost the banana harvest. the man, identified as thomas peli, told his followers that the banana harvest would increase every time they had sex in public, according to the parpua new guinea post-courier - and he reinforced his demands for public fornication with threats of violence. police only heard about peli's activities in the remote village of yamina when a villager trekked for 12 hours to reach the nearest town and alert authorities. the enforced public sex has been going on for three or four months, according to witnesses. several times, naked people have been seen trying to enter a nearby mining area, but have been stopped because of a policy against allowing naked people to walk round the mine. when three police officers contacted peli at his house, the cult leader emerged naked, and fled into the bush with seven of his followers - using two of his wives as human shields when the police fired warning shots. police retreated in order to avoid a confrontation, but will return with reinforcements to comb the nearby hills for the cult leader and his followers. source
