if it's going to cost more to repair (inspection) your jeep than it's worth, why not give it a chance to fulfill its birth right before dying?
three men in a jeep traveling underneath a plane at 80 mph used a pole to yank its locked landing gear down during a risky in-flight fix at the new smyrna beach airport, according to local 6 news.
a pilot and student were simulating gear failure scenarios friday when the simulation became the real thing. the plane's landing gear became stuck in the up position.
the plane made four passes as the men attempted to unlock the landing gear. on the fifth pass, the plane flew low and slow enough for the men in the jeep, traveling 80 mph, to fix the landing gear with a pole.
aviators credited the pilot with maintaining a steady altitude and a steady speed.
"it looked like a daring stunt out of an adventure movie," local 6 news reporter tarik minor said.
the main concern of the men in the jeep attempting to fix the plane was avoiding the plane's propeller.
"at no point during any of the maneuvers were we skeptical how the outcome would be," tetrault said. we were very positive we would have a successful landing."
the airport is investigating the incident and filing a report with the faa.
a spokesman said all regular safety procedures were followed.
