inmate had $173k in fridge

brazil (reuters) - with a plasma tv, a dvd player, $172,000 in cash, gym equipment, two refrigerators and a couple of guns, genilson lino da silva had everything he needed for a luxurious life -- in his brazilian prison cell.

it came to an end on monday when his cell, which also contained a king-sized bed, was raided in a police operation against drug traffickers in the northern city of salvador.

"he was alone in all that comfort. it wasn't very big but the other cells had several prisoners in them," a spokesman for bahian state authorities said on tuesday.

officials said da silva, also known by his nickname "leg," was serving time as the biggest drug trafficker in bahia state. he was reported as saying the money in his cell was from old robberies and gambling in prison.

"we will investigate if the leaders of the prison were conniving in this," paulo gomes, a state prosecutor, told reporters.

he said he was not surprised that kidnappings, murders, and drug trafficking were being directed from inside the jail. "the surprise was finding 280,000 reais ($172,000) inside a cell."

clallam bay — an inmate hankering for hot sausage got in hot water when the cooking fire he set in his toilet forced the evacuation of a prison wing.

clallam bay corrections center spokeswoman denise larson says smoke was spotted about 9:25 p.m. wednesday coming from a sewer vent pipe. she says 130 inmates from the close-custody unit of the prison near the tip of washington's olympic peninsula were evacuated to a dining hall while local firefighters and prison staff responded.

the smoke was traced to the inmate's cell, and he admitted trying to heat up snack sausage bought from an inmate store in the stainless steel toilet, larson says. the toilet chef was placed in segregation pending discipline, while the other prisoners were returned to their cells by midnight.

Video: Judge Accused of Sex With Inmates

judge accused of sex with inmates

the trial of a former us judge accused of having sex with male inmates in exchange for leniency is set to start in mobile, alabama.

herman thomas, 48, denies the charges, which include sodomy, kidnapping, extortion, sex abuse and assault.

up to 15 current and former prisoners are set to testify against him at the jury trial.

he was once the democratic party's choice to be the first black federal judge in south alabama.

mr thomas resigned as a judge in 2007 following allegations that he spanked inmates in his private office at the county courthouse with a paddle.

in april this year, he was indicted on more serious charges.

if he is convicted of the charges of kidnapping, he could face a sentence of life in prison.

court records show that some of the inmates involved said they were checked out of jail for meetings with the defendant in either his car or in his office.

they claim they were abused during these meetings.

however, mr thomas's lawyer, robert clark, has said the alleged victims were trying to ruin his client's career.

in april, he described the situation as a "a high-tech lynching" and said it was politically motivated.

he said: "they don't like uppity black folks, and that's what they consider herman."

mr thomas's license to practice has already been suspended.

he has previously said he was trying to mentor the inmates.

a former democratic state senator and colleague, bob eddington, said: "i've always had the highest regard for him.

"the allegations were a complete surprise to me and everyone else who knew him."

the national association for the advancement of colored people (naacp), a civil rights organisation, has said that mr thomas is being prosecuted because of his race.

the trial is set to last several weeks.

inmate uses toilet paper cardboard to escape cell

columbia police have captured an inmate who allegedly escaped from the howard county jail using a cardboard toilet paper holder. curtis jones of new franklin was captured wednesday afternoon.

columbia police officers, who were responding to a tip, went to where jones was believed to be located, but he had fled on foot. jones was spotted a short time later and taken into custody.

jones had escaped early monday. authorities allege he used the folded cardboard to jam a door lock to his cell and fled when a jailer went to another area in the building.

jones was detained on a theft charge on suspicion of stealing anhydrous ammonia, a chemical used to manufacture methamphetamine.

he previously escaped in 1996 from the county's old jail in fayette by climbing through a hole in the ceiling.

inmate hides gun in fat layers

houston -- a nearly 600-pound man was able to hide a weapon for more than a day while he was in custody, police told kprc local 2 wednesday.

"obviously the system broke down," former harris county detention major mark kellar said. "the procedures didn't work as they were designed to work."

houston police said george vera, 25, was arrested aug. 2 and taken to the city jail. he spent a day there before being transferred to the harris county jail. after being there for 14 hours, going through intake procedures, he was taken to the showers, the final step before going to his cell. there, vera told police he had a 9mm handgun on him, along with 2 clips.

"if a person has a weapon, narcotics, anything of danger, it should have been found before he winds up in the county jail," said kellar.

kellar said vera should have been searched at least three times before getting to the jail.

vera weighs nearly 600 pounds and the gun was allegedly hidden between fat layers.

houston police officers union president gary blankinship said cadets are trained how to search morbidly obese people.

"we teach officers to lift up and look under," blankinship said. "the officer may not have arrested anyone this big before."

blankenship said that system clearly does not always work.

"they can be so big, basically short of strip searching or searching cavities, they could miss something like this," said blankinship.

the houston police department and harris county sheriff's office are doing internal investigations to figure out how this could have happened.

blankinship said they should also change the way officers are trained to search morbidly obese inmates, maybe adding hand-held metal detectors.

vera has been released from jail on bond.

Video:Company Sells Greeting Cards For Inmates

company sells greeting cards for inmates

los angeles - finding it hard to express just the right sentiment to your loved one in prison? a los angeles company may have the answer. attorney terrye l. cheathem noticed a market hallmark wasn't serving and founded three squares greetings, which provides cards for inmates.

"with more than 2.5 million people incarcerated in the unites states today, i saw that there was a tremendous need," she said.

some express simple good wishes: "we are all praying for you while you do your time."

but most show a tougher sort of love.

a christmas greeting partly reads: "you had the choice to be 'naughty or nice.' and you chose ... oh well, now you have to do your time."

cheathem said she came up with the cards when her brother-in-law served 11 months in prison. she said she went searching for the appropriate greeting card, but couldn't find what she was looking for.

"there weren't any cards on the shelf that said anything like, 'hey, you must make better choices,'" she said.

cheathem designs and writes the cards and sells them online and at a handful of stores across the nation.

"this is one product no one wants to receive and no one wants to buy, but if you need it, it's there," she said.

Video:Inmate Uses Laxatives, Butter Knife to Escape

inmate uses laxatives, butter knife to escape

an inmate who used laxatives to shed 31 pounds so he could squeeze through a hole in a prison wall had been frustrated by the indefinite sentence he was serving, a judge said friday.

robert cole, 37, spent three days on the run from police in january after slipping his 123-pound frame through a 15-centimeter wide hole he had chiseled with a butter knife in the widow frame of a hospital wing at sydney's long bay jail.

cole, who had been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment, spent three weeks scraping the brickwork near the window bars to widen the space, the new south wales state district court judge roger dive said.

dive sentenced cole on friday two years and two months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a charge of escape. the sentence was backdated to his recapture on jan. 21.

when he escaped, cole had been serving an indefinite sentence in the prison hospital after a jury found him not guilty of armed robbery in 2003 on the grounds of mental illness.

dive accepted cole was "very frustrated" at the time of his escape, as "he did not have a definite date of release and no apparent treatment plan."

cole's sister, australian television actress denise roberts, told the court her brother had "put on a lot of weight" since he was recaptured and sent to a different prison.

after serving his sentence, cole will remain in the prison hospital until government authorities decide he is no longer a public danger.

death row inmate pulls out eye, eats it

article submitted by blizzloader.

houston (ap) — a texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye and told authorities he ate it. andre thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in march 2004. their hearts also had been ripped out. he was convicted and condemned for the infant's death.

while in the grayson county jail in sherman, thomas plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. a judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.

a death-row officer at the polunsky unit of the texas department of criminal justice found thomas in his cell with blood on his face and took him to the infirmary.

"thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it," agency spokesman jason clark said friday.

thomas was treated at east texas medical center in tyler after the dec. 9 incident. then he was transferred and remains at the jester unit, a prison psychiatric facility near richmond southwest of houston.

"he will finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from day 1," bobbie peterson-cate, thomas' trial attorney, told the sherman herald democrat. "he is insane and mentally ill. it is exactly the same reason he pulled out the last one."

at his trial, defense lawyers also argued he suffered from alcohol and drug abuse.

thomas does not have an execution date.

the texas court of criminal appeals in october upheld his conviction and death sentence for the death of 13-month-old leyha marie hughes. also killed march 27, 2004, were his wife, laura christine boren, 20, and their son, 4-year-old andre lee.

thomas, from texoma, walked into the sherman police department and told a dispatcher he had just murdered the three and had stabbed himself in the chest.

thomas told police how he put his victims' hearts in his pocket and left their apartment, took them home, put them in a plastic bag and threw them in the trash.

court documents described the three victims as having "large, gaping wounds to their chests."

Video:Jailer Rubs Bologna Sandwich On Inmate's Penis

jailer rubs bologna sandwich on inmate's penis

a former franklin county deputy who was fired for feeding a jail prisoner a tainted sandwich agreed to a plea deal yesterday that places him on probation for five years.

joseph m. cantwell, 38, pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor health-code violations for giving joseph copeland a bologna sandwich that had been rubbed against another prisoner's penis.

in exchange for the guilty pleas, city prosecutor lara baker dropped charges of dereliction of duty and disorderly conduct.

baker called cantwell's behavior "grossly inappropriate" for a jail deputy. but cantwell lost his job and had no previous criminal record, she said.

franklin county municipal judge harland h. hale fined cantwell $500 but suspended a 90-day jail sentence, provided that he complete his probation.

cantwell, of park point lane in lewis center in delaware county, and another deputy, phillip barnett, photographed the sandwich incident in the downtown jail. both were fired by sheriff jim karnes in may.

barnett was not charged with a crime.

copeland and two other prisoners have sued the county.

"i'm really heartfelt sorry for the shame and embarrassment i caused (to) everyone linked to this incident, especially my fellow deputies and the sheriff," cantwell said.

defense attorney jonathan tyack said cantwell has not found another job.

the incident "was blown out of proportion and it was a prank, but i also understand why people are upset," tyack said. "no one was asking for jail time."

Video:Cat Banned From Inmate Visits

cat banned from inmate visits

a buddhist bank robber has been refused permission for his cat to visit him in jail - even though he says it's the reincarnation of his mum.

peter keonig, 46, is serving five-years for armed robberies in whirl, germany, reports the daily telegraph.

he went to court to demand the right for his cat gisela to be allowed to visit him in jail "because she is my dead mum".

buddhists believe that people come back as other animals after death.

he said: "i know it is mummy. she looks after me just the way she did. i need to see her like other prisoners see their wives and children."

the court ruling said: "while we respect the religious freedom of individuals, the accused has not been able to furnish proof that his deceased mother has been reborn in a cat. therefore, the request for visiting rights for the feline is rejected."

the court did say he would be allowed to write to the cat.

Video:Ind. Inmates Sneak Through Ceiling To Have Sex

ind. inmates sneak through ceiling to have sex

three male and three female inmates at a southern indiana jail face charges that they devised a way to sneak between cell blocks to help pass their time behind bars by having sex.

the inmates figured out how to remove metal ceiling panels in the greene county jail and used the passageway more than a dozen times in september and october, according to court documents.

the men _ ages 44, 38 and 17 _ and the women _ ages 27, 26 and 21 _ crawled through the ceiling after midnight, having sexual encounters and drinking homemade alcohol that was found hidden in the male cell block, a police affidavit said.

one male inmate who was not charged said the female inmates would "hang-out, play cards or have sex with some of the male inmates" in their cell block, the affidavit said.

the inmates were able to find a security camera "blind spot" where they could remove ceiling tiles and create a passage between the cell blocks, sheriff terry pierce said tuesday.

the inmates used a shower drain as a tool to loosen security screws and the ceiling tiles were carefully replaced so they did not appear to be disturbed, pierce said.

"we could not see it," he said.

the ceiling panels have since been secured, and pierce said he was seeking funding to improve security at the jail, which was built in 1994 in the city about 25 miles southeast of bloomington.

pierce called the inmates' activities "embarrassing" to himself and his staff.

"if your facility has a flaw, if you house prisoners in it, they will show you. they will find it," he said. "we're going to have to find a way to have a better security system."

prosecutors have filed felony escape charges against the six inmates, who were awaiting trial on a variety of charges. five of the inmates remain in the greene county jail, while one has been transferred to the monroe county jail in bloomington.

pierce said the investigation is ongoing and other current or former jail inmates may be charged.

Video:300-Pound Inmate Complains Ark. Jail Doesn't Feed Him Well

300-pound inmate complains ark. jail doesn't feed him well

bentonville, ark. - an inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.

broderick lloyd laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the benton county jail. he has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.

according to the suit, laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in september. police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

"on several occasions i have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and i felt like i was going to pass out," laswell wrote in his complaint. "about an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. i feel hungry again."

but laswell then goes on to complain that he undertakes little vigorous activity.

"if we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight," the suit says. "the only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death."

the suit also asks that the county be ordered to serve hot meals. the jail has served only cold food for years.

the meals, provided through aramark correctional institution services, average 3,000 calories a day, jail capt. hunter petray told the morning news of northwest arkansas for a story saturday.

a typical western diet consists of 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day.

laswell's suit was filed without a lawyer in u.s. district court in fayetteville.
