pornstar politician auctions breast implants

los angeles, dec 4 (reuters) - porn star mary carey, who shot to fame by running for california governor against arnold schwarzenegger, unveiled plans on tuesday to auction off her autographed, recently removed breast implants for charity.

carey said the size 36-d implants were taken out two weeks ago and replaced with larger 36-ddds and while under anesthesia she realized they could be used to raise money for breast cancer research.

"the doctors asked me what i wanted to do with them and i said, 'you know what, i'm going to keep them and try to sell them. because my grandmother had breast cancer," carey told reuters in an interview.

the 27-year-old star of such adult films as "boobsville sorority girls" and "big breasted beauties" will be seen in the upcoming vh1 reality show "celebrity rehab with dr. drew" and said that during taping she kicked addictions to the anti-anxiety drug xanax and alcohol.

"now that i'm sober i wanted a new physical state to go along with my new mental state," carey said. "i thought the auction would be a great way to spread some holiday cheer and make sure someone out there would have a mary mary christmas."

the autographed implants have been placed on ebay and carey, whose real name is mary cook, said she planned to donate some 90 percent of the proceeds to the susan g. komen breast cancer foundation.

she intends to use the rest of the money on medical bills for her mother, who suffered major injuries after jumping off a four-story building in 2006.

"i'm actually overall very anti-plastic surgery," carey said. "i watched my mom go through 11 surgeries (for her injuries) and it's like, for me to voluntarily put myself through that, the only right thing to do is make money and donate it to charity."

carey gained international fame in 2003 with her quixotic gubernatorial campaign against eventual winner schwarzenegger. she abandoned a second run for governor against schwarzenegger to be with her ailing mother and said it was then that she turned to xanax, taking three times the prescribed dose.

new 'wave' of technology (chip implants)

fed up with losing keys and forgetting passwords? don't worry - help is at hand... literally.

computer enthusiasts in the us have started implanting tiny chips in their hands, allowing them to unlock their front door or pc simply by waving.

the radio frequency identification chips are the size of a grain of rice, cost around $2 and can last up to 100 years.

they are activated when they come within three inches of a "reader", which recognises the data on them and tells the computer or door lock that the owner has returned.

the technology they use has been around for decades and is used for keeping track of everything from shop stocks to pets.

amal graafstra, 29, from vancouver, canada, has implanted chips that open his front door and log on to his computer.

"i just don't want to be without access to the things that i need to get access to," he said.

"in the worst case scenario, if i'm in the alley naked, i want to still be able to get in."

mikey sklar, 28, from brooklyn, said: "it does give you some sort of power of 'abracadabra', of making doors open and passwords enter just by a wave of your hand."

Video:Cochlear Implant May Help DEAF Hear Music

cochlear implant may help deaf hear music

article submitted by master911.

three decades ago prof graeme clark made it possible for the deaf to hear. now he is working on giving them music.

to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the world's first cochlear implant, prof clark unveiled a prototype of the next-generation "hi-fi" bionic ear he is now developing at la trobe university.

the device will see the number of electrodes feeding information to the ear jump from 22 to 50, allowing users to discern music as well as specific voices in noisy rooms.

prof clark celebrated yesterday with christine zygmunt, whose father, rod saunders, the professor helped become the world's first bionic ear recipient.

"it was the most complex package of electronics ever put into a patient and i was told i could have killed my patient, so it was traumatic," prof clark said.

"when we did work it out almost exactly 30 years ago, i asked my audiologist to test to see if he could hear real speech, and when he did i stepped quietly into the room next door and burst into tears of joy."

Video:Tooth Implant Helps Blind Woman See

tooth implant helps blind woman see

a 60-year-old us grandmother, blind for nearly a decade, has recovered her sight after surgeons implanted a tooth in her eye as a base to hold a tiny plastic lens, her doctors said today.

sharron "kay" thornton, from the southern us state of mississippi, lost her sight in 2000 when she came down with a case of stevens-johnson syndrome, a rare disease that scarred her cornea, according to the university of miami's bascom palmer eye institute.

for patients whose bodies reject a transplanted or artificial cornea, this procedure "implants the patient's tooth in the eye to anchor a prosthetic lens and restore vision", said thornton's surgeon victor perez.

in the procedure - which was pioneered in italy but was a first in the us - the medical team extracted ms thornton's canine or "eyetooth" and surrounding bone, shaved and sculpted it, and drilled a hole into it to insert an optical cylinder lens.

the tooth and the lens are implanted under the patient's skin in the cheek or shoulder for two months so they can bond, then they are carefully implanted in the center of the eye after a series of procedures to prepare the socket.

"a hole is made in the mucosa for the prosthetic lens, which protrudes slightly from the eye and enables light to re-enter the eye allowing the patient to see once again," the eye institute said.

following a series of operations, medical personnel removed the bandages from ms thornton's eyes two weeks ago.

she was able to recognize objects and faces a few hours later, and 15 days later she was able to read newspapers, the eye institute said.

"i'm looking forward to seeing my seven youngest grandchildren for the first time," said ms thornton.

"we take sight for granted, not realizing that it can be lost at any moment," the grateful patient said. "this truly is a miracle."

woman implanted with other couple's embyro

toledo, ohio (sept. 26) - a woman who had the wrong embryo implanted by a fertility clinic has given birth to a boy, her family said friday.

sean and carolyn savage released a statement friday night saying a "healthy baby boy," whom they plan to give up to his biological parents, was delivered thursday at st. vincent mercy medical center in toledo. no information about the baby or the circumstances surrounding the delivery was immediately released.

the savages, of sylvania, outside toledo, had said earlier this week the baby was to be born in the next two weeks via cesarean section.

in the statement, the savages offered congratulations to the baby's biological parents, paul and shannon morell, of suburban detroit.

"at this time, we would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to the morell family on the birth of their son," the savages' statement said. "we wish paul, shannon, their twin girls and their new baby boy the best, as they move forward with their lives together."

the savages asked for privacy in the days ahead, saying "our family is going through a very difficult time."

the morell family didn't immediately respond friday to an e-mail seeking comment.

the savages extended thanks to people around the world for their support and prayers. they thanked medical professionals for their care and treatment throughout the pregnancy and delivery.

the savages say a fertility clinic outside ohio transferred the wrong frozen embryo in february. ten days later, they got a call from a doctor at the clinic saying she was pregnant with someone else's child.

the savages said in an interview with the associated press on wednesday they never considered terminating the pregnancy or trying to fight for custody.

they have hired attorneys who say they are working to make sure the fertility clinic accepts responsibility.

the morells, who live in troy, mich., found out about the fertility clinic mistake a day after the savages.

the two couples knew nothing about each other. shannon morell feared that the pregnant woman would choose abortion, ending their chance to give their 2-year-old twin girls a sibling.

a few days passed before they learned that the savages were not only willing to continue with the pregnancy but also to hand over the baby without hesitation.

"this was someone else's child," 40-year-old carolyn savage told the ap on wednesday. "we didn't know who it was. we didn't know if they didn't have children or if this was their last chance for a child."

Video:Saudi 'Killer Chip' Implant

saudi 'killer chip' implant

it could be the ultimate in political control — but it won't be patented in germany.

german media outlets reported last week that a saudi inventor's application to patent a "killer chip," as the swiss tabloids put it, had been denied.

the basic model would consist of a tiny gps transceiver placed in a capsule and inserted under a person's skin, so that authorities could track him easily.

model b would have an extra function — a dose of cyanide to remotely kill the wearer without muss or fuss if authorities deemed he'd become a public threat.

the inventor said the chip could be used to track terrorists, criminals, fugitives, illegal immigrants, political dissidents, domestic servants and foreigners overstaying their visas.

"the invention will probably be found to violate paragraph two of the german patent law — which does not allow inventions that transgress public order or good morals," german patent and trademark office spokeswoman stephanie krüger told the english-language german-news web site the local.
