des moines, iowa — several members of a high school swim team were suspended after they impaled 15 car antennas with fetal pigs and smeared crawfish on hoods and windshields in their rival school's parking lot, their coach said. roosevelt high school swim coach steve teter said members of his team retaliated after dowling catholic high school swimmers lobbed snowballs at them at an earlier meet. the incident was discovered tuesday. "you could smell the formaldehyde from a block away," dowling assistant principal ron meyers said. the pigs likely were stolen from a biology lab. roosevelt principal kathie danielson said pig fetuses aren't labeled and the school doesn't keep inventory, so science teachers "can't be sure" they came from roosevelt. seattle police say an intoxicated 25-year-old man, who told officers he believed he was a ninja, was impaled on a metal spike monday night after a failed attempt to jump a 5-foot fence. around 11:15 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of seventh avenue after a 41-year-old man called police to say he had been assaulted, said police spokeswoman renee witt. officers arrived and found the impaled would-be ninja, witt said. it turns out the older man, who was heavily intoxicated, tried to go into a sports bar in the 600 block of king street, witt said. the younger man, who isn't a bar employee, barred the man from going inside-- and an argument between the two men escalated into a fight. at one point, the men chased each other in the street, she said. in an attempt to get away, the younger man "thought he'd basically be able to jump over this fence, and he didn't quite make it," witt said. as a police account of the incident notes, "clearly he was overconfident in his abilities." that's when the older man called police to say he'd been assaulted. as police arrived to search for a suspect, one officer heard the 25-year-old's screams and found him stuck on the fence with the metal spike jutting out from his buttock, witt said. the man was bleeding profusely. he was taken to harborview medical center, she said. questioned at the hospital, the man told police he believed he was a ninja. since the two men "were in the middle of the street, chasing each other around," witt said officers determined neither man would be arrested on suspicion of assault. source
a five-year-old girl is in a stable condition after a freak accident in which she was impaled on a knife in a dishwasher. police say the child tripped on the open door of the dishwasher and fell on to the blade of a knife in the cutlery rack. she is the daughter of a police officer stationed at eulo in southwest queensland. the accident happened around 7.30pm yesterday at the police residence attached to the police station. police from cunnamulla and an ambulance came to her aid and the girl was stabilised before the royal flying doctor service took her to brisbane, where she underwent surgery at the mater children's hospital. source
kamiah, idaho. - a north idaho woman's drive along the lochsa river earlier this month turned into a nightmare after she was impaled through her neck by a tree limb. twenty-year-old michelle childers and her husband, 22-year-old daniel childers, were taking a recreational drive along the lochsa river on september 5. michelle says they had driven down a dead end road and were on their way back out when the unimaginable happened. michelle remembers sitting in the passenger seat of the couple's truck turned toward her husband. she says she was talking, laughing and just enjoying "the beautiful day it was turning out to be." michelle says she doesn't exactly know what happened next, but somehow a limb from a spruce tree came through the passenger window and impaled her neck. she could feel a "strange" pressure on her neck and shoulder as her husband started to panic. "i asked him 'what? where is it?,'" said michelle. her husband answered, "it's in your neck." michelle remembers "thinking, praying and hoping" for a miracle as her husband tried to drive to get her medical attention. about an hour after the limb went into her neck, the couple finally arrived at lochsa lodge near the idaho/montana border. daniel ran inside where he asked to use the phone. before he could even get back to the truck, michelle heard the words "we have a nurse." michelle says the woman, kelly, a nurse practitioner from spokane was able to get a 'life flight' helicopter and ambulance headed to the lodge. that's when paula, a registered nurse from st. patrick hospital in missoula, along with her husband started talking to michelle attempting to calm her down. "something about this amazing couple made me feel like i was really going to be ok. i believed her when she said you're going to be just fine," said michelle. "so here i am sitting in a pick-up with all these wonderful people around me and a 13-inch spruce limb with branches coming off it in still in my neck." the 'life flight' helicopter arrived on scene and after the flight to st. patrick hospital, michelle went into surgery for six hours to remove the limb from her neck. michelle says the doctor's did an amazing job and she is currently recovering at home. source,clickity for bigger pics
lorry driver jason ripley was almost killed when he was impaled on a pole which came within inches of piercing his heart. the pole smashed through the windscreen of his truck and continued through his chest. the father-of-two remained conscious long enough to telephone his disbelieving boss to say: "i've had a bit of an accident." mr ripley, 39, said he owed his life to paramedics who airlifted him to hospital. the delivery man was taking timber to engineering firm henry williams, in his home town, darlington, when he collided with a steel horizontal barrier in august last year. he told the sunday sun in newcastle: "i just didn't see it at all. it went straight through my chest and out the back. there was seven or eight feet of pole sticking out. "i just thought it was pinning me. i thought it was digging into my flesh but that was it. when i looked down i realised it had gone straight through i was very shocked. it was only two or three inches away from my heart. i was just staring up at the sky, thinking that's it, i'm going to die, i'm not going to see anyone again." as jason resigned himself to dying, his thoughts turned to his partner helen todd, 38, and sons joshua, 19, and jay, 11. fire crews cut a section of the pole away, before a helicopter from the great north air ambulance arrived to take him to the james cook university hospital in middlesbrough. within minutes, he was put into the hands of doctors who put him into an induced 24-hour coma. surgeons cut into his ribs and slid the barrier out from the side, under his arm. he had to have one rib removed and another two bound together. within months of the accident, he had returned to work. source
