i saw this at a museum in san diego, below the symbols, a paragraph says: "the hobos of the early 20th century america communicated though a basic system of marks and symbols through which they gave information and warnings to their fellow knights of the road. usually, these signs and symbols would be written in chalk or coal on a fence, building, railroad trestle or sidewalk, letting other hobos know what they could expect in the area of the sign or symbol."
