an enormous blaze, the biggest since the attacks on the wtc, has turned a complex of seven historic warehouses on the east river waterfront in brooklyn to rubble.
the fire started yesterday morning. as hundreds of firefighters battled the flames unsuccessfully, the smoke could be seen for miles.
the complex was part of the historic waterfront area and was planned to be redeveloped as high-rise housing.
although the complex was officially unoccupied, it is not known if there were squatters living there at the time. firemen have reported seeing bales of cloth.
the fire is being investigated as suspicious.
12-year-old jennifer valdivia, with the help of attorney norman kent, got her baseball back from the phillies today. jennifer had caught the historic ball last july at land shark stadium; it was hit by ryan howard for his 200th home run. but a phillies representative traded her an autographed baseball for the much more valuable home run ball.
a multi-million dollar restoration project will expend $24,000 to reconstruct a "historic toilet" on the first floor of a 1912 courthouse, authorities said.
cameron county commissioners voted tuesday to allocate the money for the restroom, which will be constructed in its original location and style. the room was removed during a previous renovation to allow the installation of an elevator.
renovation began in 1994 on the building, which is a historical site overseen by the texas historical commission. the commission gave the county a $3.1 million grant for renovations and all construction must comply with specifications set forward by the group.
the $24,000 will pay for a toilet, fixtures, plumbing, plaster and mosaic tile that are true to the original style of the 1912 lavatory, the brownsville herald reported in its wednesday editions.
the project is about 80 percent complete and should be completed by march, authorities said.
what a good use for $24,000, yeah right....

barack obama is sworn in as the 44th president of the united states.
drummond, blinded by diabetes 26 years ago, experienced the highlight of her golfing career sunday, recording an ace on the 144-yard, par-3 fourth hole at mahoning valley country club. playing with her husband and coach, keith, and two friends in a steady rain, the 53-year-old drummond hit a driver on the hole. the shot cleared a water hazard, flew between traps and landed on the green, where it hit the flagstick before dropping into the hole. "they were saying, 'it's a great shot,' and then i heard it hit the pin," drummond said. "for a hole-in-one, you have to hit it onto the green, so it's a little bit of skill and a lot of luck." in 1999, golf digest said the odds of an amateur getting a hole-in-one are 1 in 12,750. that number, no doubt rises, for a blind golfer. drummond is a member of the board of directors of the united states blind golfers association, and the organization believes she is the first totally blind female to record a hole-in-one. "we've looked everywhere, and haven't been able to find anyone else," she said. drummond took up golf about 15 years ago, and three years later qualified as the first female member of the usgba. "i just try to do the best i can," said drummond, who carries a 48 handicap with the usgba. "i get nervous. "but i wasn't nervous (sunday), i just don't like playing in the rain." source: wcbstv.com
bit of backround info. because irelands rugby stadium (lansdowne road) is closed for refurbisment atm the irish rugby union needed a place to play their home games. there is only one other stadium in ireland capable of holding as much as and more people than landsdowne road could. croke park. the croke park stadium was used exclusivly for irish sports (hurling & gaelic football) for almost 100years. in 1920, in retalitaion for the ira killing several british military leaders, british auxillary forces drove tanks onto the pitch in the middle of a gaelic football match and shot indiscriminatly into the crowd killing 15 people. the next time the british would be on the field would be 87yrs later when the stadium was opened to rugby games. ireland v england.
