mcgowan stars as cherry darling, a go-go dancer gone avenger, in the “planet terror” segment of “grindhouse,” quentin tarantino and robert rodriguez’s homage to the best and bloodiest of the b-movies.
for a film that is entirely missing any semblance of a plot, “grindhouse” is one bad ass movie going experience. while you won’t find any oscar worthy performances, moving storylines, or insightful plot points, you will find strippers with machine gun leg attachments, nic cage as fu man chu, and a chase scene with two of the wickedest rides to ever come out of detroit.in a move that harks back to the double feature days of yore, “grindhouse” is actually two movies. it was the kind of flick that made me visit the bathroom three times: two to pee and one to smoke. this double feature is over three hours long, so be sure to stock up on snacks, get really stoned before entering the theater, and for fucks sake pee before you sit down to watch it. even if you don’t have to go.the first part of the double feature seemed to me like an homage to the old zombie movies of the eighties. the quality of the filming itself was bad on purpose. it reminded me of one of those cheesy daytime things you catch on sunday just to have something on the tv while you’re trying to couch-sit away your hangover, with the exception that it was actually decently done. it was just campy enough that it worked. to sum up the first two hours of the movie: strippers, guns, strippers, zombie-like creatures, more guns, helicopter decapitations, strippers, guns, and somehow bruce willis shows up towards the end. in other words, awesome.the second feature kind of drug on a bit at first. it was a weird change of pace to go from killing zombie like creatures to some chicks getting drunk in austin. while it was nice looking at rosario dawson’s fine ass in those skimpy eighties clothes, i really just didn’t give a fuck what they had to say. i found this the perfect opportunity to head off to the old keelhaul to have a quick hit of the green. i got back just in time to see kurt russell kill rose mcgowan.the rest of the movie is just really kind of a procession of gratuitous eighties style camera shots of hot women…up until the final car chase. this was the big payoff. what do you get when you put a cute aussie chick on the hood of a 1970 dodge charger and a psycho snake plisken looking kurt russell in an identical monster machine racing down back country roads at high speeds trying to kill each other? you get sweetness. sweet, sweet, sweetness.the movie ends with three pretty hot chicks beating the holy living shit out of russell for douchebaggery. a friend sitting a few seats down from me started giggling like a school girl and yelling out “snake plisken is getting beat like a bitch! snake plisken is a bitch!” it is strange, but that joke kind of made the movie ending better.ok, no more foreplay; let’s get to the point. is it worth the ten or so bucks you will shell out to see it? no, but it is worth forking over 6.50$ for a matinee showing and will give you something fun to do with your day. it is also well worth spending a couple hours of your time flagging it down with the old skull and bones, if you know what i mean. overall, zero rates this movie a 5 out of 5, if for nothing else than the awesomeness that was the machine gun strapped to the strippers stump.
