orwell rolls in his grave is a 2004 documentary film written and directed by robert kane pappas. it examines the current and past relationships between the media, the us government and corporations, analyzing the possible consequences of the concentration of media ownership. making references to george orwell's novel 1984, the film argues that reality has met and in some ways exceeded orwell's expectations about a society dominated by thought control, which is made possible by the media.
rome (reuters) - italian researchers believe they have found the remains of a female "vampire" in venice, buried with a brick jammed between her jaws to prevent her feeding on victims of a plague which swept the city in the 16th century. matteo borrini, an anthropologist from the university of florence, said the discovery on the small island of lazzaretto nuovo in the venice lagoon supported the medieval belief that vampires were behind the spread of plagues like the black death. "this is the first time that archaeology has succeeded in reconstructing the ritual of exorcism of a vampire," borrini told reuters by telephone. "this helps ... authenticate how the myth of vampires was born." the skeleton was unearthed in a mass grave from the venetian plague of 1576 -- in which the artist titian died -- on lazzaretto nuovo, which lies around three km (2 miles) northeast of venice and was used as a sanitorium for plague sufferers. the succession of plagues which ravaged europe between 1300 and 1700 fostered the belief in vampires, mainly because the decomposition of corpses was not well understood, borrini said. gravediggers reopening mass graves would sometimes come across bodies bloated by gas, with hair still growing, and blood seeping from their mouths and believe them to be still alive. the shrouds used to cover the faces of the dead were often decayed by bacteria in the mouth, revealing the corpse's teeth, and vampires became known as "shroud-eaters." according to medieval medical and religious texts, the "undead" were believed to spread pestilence in order to suck the remaining life from corpses until they acquired the strength to return to the streets again. "to kill the vampire you had to remove the shroud from its mouth, which was its food like the milk of a child, and put something uneatable in there," said borrini. "it's possible that other corpses have been found with bricks in their mouths, but this is the first time the ritual has been recognized." while legends about blood-drinking ghouls date back thousands of years, the modern figure of the vampire was encapsulated in the irish author bram stoker's 1897 novel "dracula," based on 18th century eastern european folktales. source
london (reuters) - an ancient burial pit containing 45 severed skulls, that could be a mass war grave dating back to roman times, has been found under a road being built for the 2012 british olympics. archaeologists, who have only just begun excavating the site, say they do not yet know who the bones might belong to. "we think that these dismembered bodies are likely to be native iron age britons. the question is -- how did they die and who killed them," said dig head, david score, of oxford archaeology. "were they fighting amongst themselves? were they executed by the romans? did they die in a battle with the romans? "the exciting scenario for us possibly is that there were skirmishes with the invading romans and that's how they ended up chopped up in a pit," he told reuters. when the main roman invasion force landed in britain in ad 43, claudius' legions moved swiftly through western england to subdue fierce celtic tribes. the skulls and other bones were unearthed at a place called ridgeway hill, on the construction site of a new major relief road to weymouth, on the dorset coast in southwest england. the seaside town -- in the heart of thomas hardy country -- is to host sailing events for the london olympics. the grave site is close to maiden castle -- europe's largest iron age hill fort where local tribes are said to have staged a last stand against the roman legions after the invasion. some historians believe the romans sacked the site, butchering its population including women and children, before burning it to the ground. score said they had counted 45 skulls so far in the 6-metre wide pit, together with a tangle of torsos, arms and legs, more could be found in the coming weeks. most of the skulls were those of young men, supporting the theory they could have been killed in battle or executed en masse. "one of the things that we will be looking for is do they have sword cut marks on the bones, and how were the heads dismembered: prior to or after death in an act of victory," score said. archaeologists say they could also be roman citizens or indigenous people who had died through disease or disaster. few artefacts have so far been found with the bones, though pottery shards dating to the late iron age and early roman period have been found scattered around the pit. "it is rare to find a burial site like this one," score said. "there are lots of different types of burial where skeletons may be aligned along a compass axis or in a crouched position, but to find something like this is just incredible." source
madrid, spain — a new kind of silent hero has joined the fight against climate change. santa coloma de gramenet, a gritty, working-class town outside barcelona, has placed a sea of solar panels atop mausoleums at its cemetery, transforming a place of perpetual rest into one buzzing with renewable energy. flat, open and sun-drenched land is so scarce in santa coloma that the graveyard was just about the only viable spot to move ahead with its solar energy program. the power the 462 panels produces — equivalent to the yearly use by 60 homes — flows into the local energy grid for normal consumption and is one community's odd nod to the fight against global warming. "the best tribute we can pay to our ancestors, whatever your religion may be, is to generate clean energy for new generations. that is our leitmotif," said esteve serret, director conste-live energy, a spanish company that runs the cemetery in santa coloma and also works in renewable energy. in row after row of gleaming, blue-gray, the panels rest on mausoleums holding five layers of coffins, many of them marked with bouquets of fake flowers. the panels face almost due south, which is good for soaking up sunshine, and started working on wednesday — the culmination of a project that began three years ago. the concept emerged as a way to utilize an ideal stretch of land in a town that wants solar energy but is so densely built-up — santa coloma's population of 124,000 is crammed into four square kilometers (1.5 square miles) — it had virtually no place to generate it. at first, parking solar panels on coffins was a tough sell, said antoni fogue, a city council member who was a driving force behind the plan. "let's say we heard things like, 'they're crazy. who do they think they are? what a lack of respect!' "fogue said in a telephone interview. but town hall and cemetery officials waged a public-awareness campaign to explain the worthiness of the project, and the painstaking care with which it would be carried out. eventually it worked, fogue said. the panels were erected at a low angle so as to be as unobtrusive as possible. "there has not been any problem whatsoever because people who go to the cemetery see that nothing has changed," fogue said. "this installation is compatible with respect for the deceased and for the families of the deceased." the cemetery hold the remains of about 57,000 people and the solar panels cover less than 5 percent of the total surface area. they cost 720,000 euros ($900,000) to install and each year will keep about 62 tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, serret said. the community's leaders hope to erect more panels and triple the electricity output, fogue said. before this, the town had four other solar parks — atop buildings and such — but the cemetery is by far the biggest. he said he has heard of cemeteries elsewhere in spain with solar panels on the roofs of their office buildings, but not on above-ground graves. source
