london (reuters) - a man discovered making kebabs near a corpse has been banned from managing food businesses and fined 3,800 pounds, wolverhampton city council said tuesday. jaswinder singh, 45, was found by police making kebabs at pappu sweet center and catering in wolverhampton in august in a kitchen where a dead man was lying on a sofa. as well the corpse, the policeman discovered another man smoking and spitting repeatedly on the floor, while in a room near the kitchen, a defrosting chicken, oozing blood and juices, was covered with flies. environmental health officers had visited the shop over a number of months previously where they had warned singh to improve his food hygiene standards after finding rat droppings as well as a dead rat beneath a pot. "we were called to reports of a sudden death," said west midlands police spokeswoman joanne hunt. "a post mortem was carried out, but found the death was not suspicious, so the matter was referred to the coroner." wolverhampton's city council's chief environmental services officer nick edwards said: "the council will not tolerate those who put the public at risk by preparing food in insanitary conditions. "we are pleased that the council's actions have resulted in the courts banning this individual from ever running a food business again." source
sydney (reuters) - a bitter row has broken out between one of sydney's largest tourist pubs and a family of five who accused chefs of serving human excrement in their gelato after they complained about noise during a football match. state government food minister ian macdonald confirmed on wednesday that frozen fecal matter had been found in a serving of chocolate gelato offered to placate pub patron steve whyte and his wife jessica, who became "violently ill" after eating it. "the stench went through my nostrils, i retched and spat it into the napkin," jessica whyte told the daily telegraph newspaper, recounting what local media are calling "gelati-gate." the tainted sweet was allegedly served up at the coogee bay hotel, one of sydney's largest and most popular beachfront hotels, located just a few minutes south of bondi beach. the pub has denied serving excrement to the whyte's after they complained they were unable to hear a televised football game due to loud music, with both the chef and restaurant manager volunteering for dna tests to prove their innocence. both sides have accused the other of money seeking, with the whyte's claiming they were offered a$5,000 ($3,240) in hush money by pub general manager tony williams, while they in turn were accused of trying to negotiate up to a$1 million in damages. the argument over accusations of "kitchen revenge" has shocked australians, leading into an expected searing, gelato-friendly summer, capturing national headlines for days. macdonald said dna analysis would now be done to determine if the sample was of human or animal origin as police and food authorities investigate the case. chicago (reuters) - an elderly woman has been living with two skeletons and a badly decomposed body of her siblings in a suburb of chicago, one of whom may have died at least 20 years ago, authorities said on saturday. the remains were found covered by sheets in various parts of the house in evanston on friday but no foul play was suspected. authorities said one of the siblings was last seen alive in the 1980s, the second in 2003 and the third in may. the woman living in the house, described as "upwards of 90 years of age," was cooperating in the investigation and was taken to a facility for care. authorities, who did not release the names of the deceased, said a care worker had alerted them to the situation. autopsies were due to be performed on saturday. source have any interesting articles you'd like to share? article request thread.

it was embarrassing enough that mark stahnke (wahukesha, wisconsin) woke up in a neighbor's yard without his pants. then he remembered they contained a cashier's check for $41,093, meant for his son, and several hundred dollars in cash. but he got everything back friday, including the pants, thanks to a man and his dog. stahnke said he doesn't know what happened between when he left the bar and when he woke up the next morning, and police were skeptical when he filed a report. "we're used to hearing weird stories, but with his intoxication we figured this one would be different, that the amount of money wouldn't be exact," police lt. william graham said. "how do you get so intoxicated that you lose your pants?" stahnke said he had met his son at a bar and doesn't remember much afterward. "i woke up cold not knowing where the heck i was, and i didn't realize it at first because i still had my shoes and socks on," he said. an escaped convict has been recaptured in taiwan - at a barbecue party organized at the local police station. police in xinzhu city invited residents to celebrate the moon festival with them. but officers could not believe their eyes when they saw an escaped drug dealer called chen, who had just been listed as one of the city’s most wanted criminals, at the party. police officer cai zhengtong, who was in charge of the barbecue, said: “i saw a man dressed in an eye-catching yellow windbreaker enter the place and sit in the corner. he was enjoying the barbecue with the others.” police at the party quickly arrested chen. he told officers he thought it would have been the last place police would have thought of looking for him. source
click the animated image to see the footprint. a paleontologist has discovered a giant footprint most likely left by a towering tyrannosaur as it pounded the earth 65 million years ago. the footprint, which measures about 2.5 feet (74 centimeters) in length, was found in rocks in montana's hell creek formation, a well-known site for tyrannosaurus rex fossils. "we are relatively confident that it's been made by a theropod, or predatory dinosaur," said paleontologist phillip manning of the university of manchester in england, who was part of the team that found the print. based on the footprint's slender toes, toe positions and overall size, manning and his colleagues have narrowed down the dinosaur's species name to either t. rex or nanotyrannus, a tyrannosaur whose name means "tiny tyrant." t. rex is thought to have grown to about 40 feet (12 meters) in length, while nanotyrannus was likely just about 17 feet (5 meters) long. both dinosaurs lived 67 million to 65 million years ago at the end of the cretaceous period. of course there's always the possibility that a species of dinosaur that is new to science left the print, manning said. a future discovery of a more pristine and unweathered footprint at the site, made by the same species, would also help in identifying the dinosaur that made the latest print. source
woman recovered 1970 artwork by mexican artist rufino tamayo. new york - a painting stolen more than 20 years ago was found lying in trash along a street, and now it could fetch up to $1 million at an auction. elizabeth gibson didn’t know anything about the brightly colored work she spotted on her morning walk four years ago on manhattan’s upper west side, but she said she took it home because “it had a strange power.” “i know nothing of modern art but it didn’t seem right for any piece of art to be discarded like that,” gibson told the sotheby’s auction house. it turned out that it was a 1970 painting by mexican artist rufino tamayo, titled “tres personajes” (three people), and had been stolen more than 20 years ago. gibson said she learned of the work’s worth when her research led her to the web site of “antiques roadshow fyi,” a companion program to the pbs show “antiques roadshow.” sotheby’s expert august uribe had featured the painting on “antiques roadshow fyi” after it was stolen. sotheby’s says “tres personajes” is an important work that represents the artist’s mature period. the painting was returned to the original owners, who wish to remain anonymous. the new york times said the couple paid $55,000 for it. sotheby’s says it could bring up to $1 million when it is sold at its latin american art auction on nov. 20. source

"we saw something bobbing about in the sea and we decided to take it out of the water," said a stall worker.
