passenger arrested after trying to open door during flight

a passenger tried to open a plane door during a frontier airlines flight on saturday morning but was subdued by airline staff and passengers, an airline spokesman said.

police and transportation security administration staff met flight 514 after the plane landed in new york city and took the man into custody, said frontier spokesman joe hodas.

hodas said the man, whose name was not released, would not have been able to open the door even if he had not been subdued. "you need special training to open the door," he said.

there were 128 passengers and five crew members on the plane, hodas said.

passenger bobby vigil of estes park told kusa-tv in denver that the man had been acting strangely. vigil said he and other passengers helped a flight attendant tie the man to his seat with duct tape.

"the whole rest of the flight, all the way in, he was yelling and trying to bite the tape, and they ended up restraining him with an extra lap belt," said vigil.

new york (ap) -- a runway at john f. kennedy international airport was shut down briefly wednesday morning after at least 78 turtles emerged from a nearby bay and crawled onto the tarmac.

grounds crews eventually rounded up the wayward reptiles and deposited them back in the brackish water farther from airport property, but not before the incident disrupted jfk's flight schedule and contributed to delays that reached nearly 1 1/2 hours.

"apparently, this is something the tower has experienced before," said federal aviation administration spokesman jim peters. "i guess it's the season for spawning."

the invasion began unfolding, slowly, at around 8:30 a.m., when an american eagle flight crew reported seeing three turtles while taxiing out for departure. before long, a chorus of pilots was radioing the tower to report turtles either on the end of a runway that juts out into the water, or approaching on the grass.

the faa halted flights for about 12 minutes shortly before 9 a.m. while some of the turtles were cleared away, then quit using the runway entirely after getting new reports of "massive numbers" of turtles on the tarmac, peters said.

port authority of new york and new jersey spokesman john kelly said airport crews gathered up the turtles in about 35 minutes.

he identified the turtles as diamondback terrapins, a species common to jamaica bay, which surrounds the airport. the turtles appeared to be about 8 inches long and weigh 2 to 3 pounds each.

jets hit turtles a few times each year at jfk, usually in the final days of june or earliest days in july, according to the faa's wildlife strike database. there have been no recent reports of the strikes causing any damage to an airplane.

frankfurt (reuters) - german nudists will be able to start their holidays early by stripping off on the plane if they take up a new offer from an eastern german travel firm.

travel agency ossiurlaub.de said it would start taking bookings from friday for a trial nudist day trip from the eastern german town of erfurt to the popular baltic sea resort of usedom, planned for july 5 and costing 499 euros ($735).

"it's expensive, i know," managing director enrico hess told reuters by phone. "it's because the plane's very small. there's no real reason why a flight in which one flies naked should be more expensive than any other."

the 55 passengers will have to remain clothed until they board, and dress before disembarking, said hess. the crew will remain clothed throughout the flight for safety reasons.

"i wish i could say we thought of it ourselves but the idea came from a customer," hess told reuters by phone. "it's an unusual gap in the market."

naturism, or "free body culture" (fkk) as it is known in germany, was banned by the nazis but blossomed again after the second world war, particularly in eastern germany.

"there are fkk hotels where you can go into the restaurants and shops naked, for example," hess said. "for fkk fans -- not that i'm one of them -- it's nothing unusual."

"i don't want people to get the wrong idea. it's not that we're starting a swinger club in mid-air or something like that," he added. "we're a perfectly normal holiday company."

a blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a flight from la to ny. the lawyer asks if she would like to play a game. the blonde, who's tired and just wants to take a nap, politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks.

the lawyer persists and says the game is easy and a lot of fun. he explains, "i ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vice versa."

again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. the lawyer, now agitated, says, "okay, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5.00, and if i don't know the answer, i will pay you $500.00."

this catches the blonde's attention; and figuring there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, she agrees to the game.

the lawyer asks the first question: "what's the distance from the earth to the moon?"

the blonde doesn't say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill, and hands it to the lawyer. "okay," says the lawyer, "it's your turn."

she asks the lawyer, "what goes up a hill with three legs but comes down with four legs?"

the lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references--no answer. he taps into the airphone with his modem and searches the net and the library of congress--no answer. frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and coworkers, to no avail. after an hour, he wakes the blonde and hands her $500.

the blonde says "thank you" and turns back to get some more sleep.

the lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, "well, what's the answer?"

without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep.
