after losing the election last month, the italian prime minister silvio berlusconi, the longest-serving pm in italy since wwii, finally resigned.
berlusconi lost the elections to left-wing romano prodi four weeks ago, but has contested the outcome of the election. he even said that he would challenge the results in court.
however, just a few hours ago, berlusconi accepted his loss and handed his resignation to president carlo azeglio ciampi. after a short meeting at the presidential palace, the presidential office confirmed this in an official statement.
it may well be that italy will have a new government at the end of this week. berlusconi will stay on as caretaker pm until the new government is installed.
prodi said in a statement that he was happy that berlusconi finally resigned and that he hoped a new government would be formed soon by president ciampi.
yesterday marked the beginning of the construction at ground zero.
construction of the 1,776 ft high freedom tower was finally started after months of disputes between the site’s owners, property developers, city and state agencies and objections by september 11 family members. the families concerns were mostly about the design of the memorial.
as construction trucks drove down the ramp to ground zero, governor george pataki said, "it is going to be a symbol of our freedom and independence."
the freedom tower will be as high as the wtc towers, but an illuminated spire will stretch the building to 1,776 ft.
it is expected that the tower will be finished by 2011, with five other towers completed in 2012. construction on the memorial has also begun.
a french motorcylist has been rescued from a well, where he had been trapped for five days following an accident in the eastern france region of moselle, rescue officials said tuesday.
the 22-year-old man had been trapped under his motorized bicycle in the five-feet-deep well since last wednesday. he was spotted by a farmer from his tractor on monday. rescuers took two hours to free him.
the semi-conscious man was taken to sarrebourg's saint nicolas hospital, where rescue officials said he was in serious condition.
the young man's parents reported the disappearance to police on friday, two days after he went missing on his way to work.

after more than two years of idling in development hell--largely due to chris tucker not being in any rush to get back to work, not even for an eight-figure payday--new line cinema has locked up all the principals and is slated to begin production next year for a 2007 summer release.
the studio had originally hoped to begin work on the sequel in 2003, but tucker, despite being offered $20 million, demanded script approval. in the meantime, the other key players--costar jackie chan, director brett ratner and screenwriter jeff nathanson--began to fill up their calendars with other gigs.
now, per variety, all four have signed on to make the third installment in the action-comedy franchise about two mismatched cops--one from los angeles (tucker), the other from hong kong (chan)--who team up to battle baddies.
as first reported in new yorker last april, tucker will still receive $20 million upfront, and he'll get 20 percent of the back-end gross; those terms will also extend to a future film to be determined. in exchange, the comedian has agreed to forego script approval, as long as the script closely mirrors nathanson's pitch.
