a zoo in gaza has got around animal import restrictions by dyeing stripes on donkeys to make 'zebras'. the owner of the marah land zoo in gaza city said he had used masking tape and black hair dye, applied with a paint-brush, to disguise the white females. mohammed bargouthi said it would have cost him more than £25,000 to bring in a real zebra via smuggling tunnels. "the first time we used paint but it didn't look good," said mr bargouthi. "the children don't know, so they call them zebras and they are happy to see something new." all the real animals at the zoo, including monkeys and a tigress, had been smuggled under the border at great expense, he said. two genuine zebras died of starvation earlier this year during the israeli military offensive, he added. the animal restrictions are part of the israeli blockade of gaza, imposed in an attempt to reduce rocket attacks and weaken the leadership of hamas. source

territory donkeys could soon be helping to increase the sex drive of chinese women. a hong kong company is trying to locate up to a million donkey skins every year to be used in the making of traditional medicines. to date, the company has been sourcing these skins from south america, but has recently turned its attention to australia. sydney-based exporter john fleming wants to hunt feral donkeys in the northern territory to sell overseas. "they want the skins, but not for leather. "apparently there is a certain extract in the skin they can use for traditional medicine,'' he said. mr fleming said he did not know what the type of medicines would be produced. chinese traditional healers are known to use donkey skins to extract ejiao. this extract can be used to make nu bao, a traditional chinese medicine which is meant to improve vitality, increase a woman's libido and help with period pain. "they're after a lot of donkey skins. as much as they can get their hands on,'' mr fleming said. mr fleming and a business partner recently drove to the territory from queensland and started asking locals about feral donkeys. "it seems there are a lot of feral donkeys out there and people are basically shooting them for sport,'' he said. there are an estimated 300,000 feral donkeys in the northern territory. mr fleming believes their hides would be worth around us$30 each. "we need to get a handle on how much they would pay. we need to make sure it would be cost effective,'' he said. source
an old man, a boy and a donkey were going to town. the boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked. as they went along they passed some people who remarked it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding. the man and boy thought maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions.
later, they passed some people who remarked, "what a shame, he makes that little boy walk." they then decided they both would walk!
soon they passed some more people who thought they were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride. so, they both rode the donkey.
now they passed some people who shamed them by saying how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey. the boy and man said they were probably right, so they decided to carry the donkey.
as they crossed the bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned.
the moral of the story; "if you try to please everyone, you might as well kiss your ass good-bye."
apparently, in the baghdad zoo, the lions are fed live donkeys. it's not terribly gruesome to watch because of the distance, but you definitely get a sense for how fast and powerful the big cats are.

"around here, if someone commits a crime they are jailed," gomez said — "no matter who they are." the owner, mauro gutierrez, told the associated press he would try to reach a friendly arrangement to pay the men's bills, estimated at us$420 (euro270). the victims said the donkey bit genaro vazquez, 63, in the chest on sunday and then kicked 52-year-old andres hernandez as he tried to come to the rescue, fracturing his ankle. "all of a sudden, the animal was on top of us like it was rabid," hernandez said. police said it took a half-dozen men to control the enraged burro. chiapas police have thrown animals in the slammer before, including a bull that devoured corn crops and destroyed two wooden vending stands in march. in 2006, a dog was locked up for 12 days after biting someone. his owners were fined us$18. source
