Video:Scientists Discover “Super Earth”

scientists discover “super earth”

somewhere deep in space, 9,000 light years away from our beloved source of light and the ball of flaming gas we call the sun, the good folks at nasa have found a planet with a very similar chemical composition to our own, so much so that it is being touted by the media as “super earth”.

the celestial body in question, with roughly the same mass as neptune, was discovered by scientists working on a new project they call ogle, short for optical gravitational lensing experiment.

it works by measuring the light coming in from distant stars and looking for changes. when a massive object, such as a star, passes in front of another object, the passing object’s gravity bends the light from the background star and magnifies it like a lens so that it appears brighter. this newest discovery, brought about by the revolutionary technique, is forcing scientists to revise their calculations on how many possible earth-like planets there may be in the universe.

“it appears to be a terrestrial planet of rock and ice. the implication is that these icy super-earths are pretty common.” said andrew gould, professor of astronomy at ohio state university.

this is only the latest announcement in a string of space related news. the human race is slowly, step by step, conquering the final frontier. we have found traces of life on an icy moon, begun the process of mapping mars, and now discovered a planet that has challenged the thinking of scientists everywhere. the big question is whether or not (or when) we will find life somewhere out in the unknown blackness of space.

one day that question will be definitively answered and the course of the human race will be changed indefinitely. until then, enjoy the buildup.

Video:Motorist Discovers Dying Wife On Road

motorist discovers dying wife on road

a motorist who stopped to help a woman who had been hit by a car was devastated to discover the dying pedestrian was his wife and mother to his three sons.

james peters was on his way to pick up his wife, susan, from a bus stop near their home in surrey, uk, when he came across the wreckage of an accident, the daily mail reported.

he stopped to help, but did not realise the badly injured woman was his wife until another passer-by handed him her handbag.

"i didn't realise it was her for five, six even seven minutes," said mr peters, who runs his own business and is president of twickenham rugby club.

"i had just stopped to help as i saw there had been an accident. then another person who had stopped handed me a handbag and i recognised it. i couldn't believe it."

the couple had celebrated their 40-year wedding anniversary just two days before the accident, the daily mail said.

mrs peters, 60, was returning home from her work at surrey county council's offices in kingston, surrey. she was struck by a blue volkswagen golf, the daily mail said.

mr peters was making the short five-minute drive to pick her up so she did not have to walk home, the paper said.

"it's no reassurance to me that i was there at her final moments, there's not much reassurance anywhere, i'm devastated," mr peters said.

"i'm being looked after by my family but it is hard. my wife was perfect."

a close neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told the daily mail: "they are such a lovely couple. they were getting to that age where they could really start to enjoy what they had achieved in life.

"it's taken my breath away i cannot believe it. jim must be destroyed."

Video:Scientists Discover 10th Planet's Moon

scientists discover 10th planet's moon

the astronomers who claim to have discovered the 10th planet in the solar system have another intriguing announcement: it has a moon.

while observing the new, so-called planet from hawaii last month, a team of astronomers led by michael brown of the california institute of technology spotted a faint object trailing next to it. because it was moving, astronomers ruled it was a moon and not a background star, which is stationary.

the moon discovery is important because it can help scientists determine the new planet's mass. in july, brown announced the discovery of an icy, rocky object larger than pluto in the kuiper belt, a disc of icy bodies beyond neptune. brown labeled the object a planet and nicknamed it xena after the lead character in the former tv series "xena: warrior princess." the moon was nicknamed gabrielle, after xena's faithful traveling sidekick.

by determining the moon's distance and orbit around xena, scientists can calculate how heavy xena is. for example, the faster a moon goes around a planet, the more massive a planet is.

but the discovery of the moon is not likely to quell debate about what exactly makes a planet. the problem is there is no official definition for a planet and setting standards like size limits potentially invites other objects to take the "planet" label.

possessing a moon is not a criteria of planethood since mercury and venus are moonless planets. brown said he expected to find a moon orbiting xena because many kuiper belt objects are paired with moons.

the newly discovered moon is about 155 miles wide and 60 times fainter than xena, the farthest-known object in the solar system. it is currently 9 billion miles away from the sun, or about three times pluto's current distance from the sun.

scientists believe xena's moon was formed when kuiper belt objects collided with one another. the earth's moon formed in a similar way when earth crashed into an object the size of mars.

the moon was first spotted by a 10-meter telescope at the w.m. keck observatory in hawaii on sept. 10. scientists expect to learn more about the moon's composition during further observations with the hubble space telescope in november.

brown planned to submit a paper describing the moon discovery to the astrophysical journal next week. the international astronomical union, a group of scientists responsible for naming planets, is deciding on formal names for xena and gabrielle.

that's pretty awesome...

Video:Rat-Eating Plant Discovered

rat-eating plant discovered

little shop of horrors eat your heart out - or in this case, rats.

scientists in the uk have discovered a giant killer plant that lures rodents and insects into its trap and devours them with acid-like enzymes, the sun reports.

the remarkably rare giant pitcher plant is believed to be the largest meat-eating flora in the world.

the plant, which is green and red and has a stem that can grow up to 4ft long, can only be found high up on the windswept slopes of mount victoria in the phillipines.

after hearing of missionaries who had seen “whole rats” being eaten by the shrub botanists stewart mcpherson and alistair robinson led a team of scientists to the asian nation and uncovered the rare species.

"the plant produces spectacular traps which catch not only insects, but also rodents,” mc mcpherson said.

"it is remarkable that it remained undiscovered until the 21st century.”

the flesh-eating plant has been named after famous wildlife expert sir david attenborough, who mr mcpherson named as a nature inspiration.

"my team and i named it in honour of sir david whose work has inspired generations toward a better understanding of the beauty and diversity of the natural world."

named the "nepenthes attenboroughii", mr mcpherson revealed he and mr robinson first made the discovery in 2007.

as for mr attenborough, how does he feel about having a vicious killer plant named after him?

"i'm absolutely flattered. this is a remarkable species the largest of its kind,” mr attenborough said.

"i was contacted by the team shortly after the discovery and they asked if they could name it after me. i was delighted and told them, ‘thank you very much’.

"i'm told it can catch rats then eat them with its digestive enzymes. it's certainly capable of that."

scientists discover that moose antlers act as amplifiers

the secret of a moose's exceptional hearing is down to its antlers, apparently. scientists have discovered that those cool, gnarly things that look so fabulous perched atop the furry freaks act as amplifiers, allowing mr moose to be able to hear things up to 2 miles away. added to the animal's already acute hearing—it's to do with its large ears that rotate in almost every direction, apparently—antlers improve the beast's audio capacities by as much as 19 per cent. when a sound was played through the speaker (something by the rasmus springs to mind) the sound meter recorded 59.5 decibels when the ear was facing the source of the sound, and 57.5 decibels when it was facing backwards. but when it was moved into a sideways position, and where the antlers worked as an amp, the level came out at 61 decibels.

Video:Newly Discovered Element

newly discovered element

investigators at a major research institution recently discovered the heaviest element known to science and have tentatively named it adminstratium. administratium has no protons or electrons; thus it has an atomic number of 0. however, it has 1 neutron, 125 deputy neutrons, 75 assistant neutrons and 111 deputy assistant neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. these 312 particles are held together by a force that involves the continuous exchange of meson-like particles called morons. it is also surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. since it has no electrons, administratium is chemically inert. nevertheless, it can be detected chemically, as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. according to the discoverers, a minute amount of administratium causes one reaction to take more than four days to complete, when it would normally have occurred in less than a second. although administratium has a normal half-life of three years, it does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a proportion of the deputy neutrons, assistant neutrons and deputy assistant neutrons exchange places. in fact, an administratium's sample mass will actually increase over time, since with each reorganization some of the morons inevitably become neutrons, forming new isotopes. this characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to speculate that administratium is spontaneously formed whenever morons reach a certain level of concentration. this hypothetical quantity is referred to as the "critical morass." you will recognize it when it occurs.

Video:Giant Rat Discovered in Indonesia Jungle

giant rat discovered in indonesia jungle

jakarta, indonesia — researchers in a remote indonesian jungle have discovered a giant rat that is about five times the size of a typical city rat and a tiny possum, scientists said monday.

unearthing new species of mammals in the 21st century is considered very rare. the discoveries by a team of american and indonesian scientists are being studied further to confirm their status.

the animals were found in the foja mountains rainforest in eastern papua province in a june expedition, said u.s.-based conservation international, which organized the trip in the southeast asian nation along with the indonesian institute of science.

"the giant rat is about five times the size of a typical city rat," said kristofer helgen, a scientist with the smithsonian institution in washington. "with no fear of humans, it apparently came into the camp several times during the trip."

the possum was described as "one of the world's smallest marsupials."

a 2006 expedition to the same stretch of jungle ??? dubbed by conservation international as a "lost world" because until then humans had rarely visited it ??? unearthed scores of exotic new species of palms, butterflies and palms.

papua has some of the world's largest tracts of rainforest, but like elsewhere in indonesia they are being ravaged by illegal logging. scientists said last year that the foja area was not under immediate threat, largely because it was so remote.

"it's comforting to know that there is a place on earth so isolated that it remains the absolute realm of wild nature," said expedition leader bruce beehler. "we were pleased to see that this little piece of eden remains as pristine and enchanting as it was when we first visited."

Video: Police Discover Souped-up Prison Tunnel

police discover souped-up prison tunnel

santiago (reuters) - police in chile, a country known more for mining than for prison breaks, discovered on wednesday an elaborate tunnel with built-in ventilation and noise barriers near a penitentiary in the santiago area.

the 279-foot (85-meter) long tunnel resembled an underground mine structure, built with cement and wooden beams and boasting electrical power and carts for hauling away dirt and rock.

police said the wives of two inmates at the colina ii prison had hired four miners to build the escape tunnel, which led from a nearby house toward the facility and was only 98 feet shy of an interior prison yard.

"if the tunnel had reached its destination, as many as 200 people could have escaped," felipe harboe, the interior ministry's no. 2 official, told reporters.

police heard about the tunnel while monitoring prisoners' telephone conversations as part of an investigation into drug trafficking.

"the tunnel is striking. i don't know of anything like it in police history," rene castellon, a deputy director among police detectives, said about the structure that was nearly high enough in some places for an adult to stand upright.
