an illinois judge has halted the circumcision of an 8-year-old boy while his father contests the mother's plan for the operation.
cook county judge jordan kaplan granted a temporary restraining order on the operation friday, the chicago tribune reports, but to preserve the child's privacy the newspaper isn't releasing names.
the 31-year-old mother has said two doctors agreed with the circumcision, saying it will prevent medical problems.
the 49-year-old father fears it will harm his son both emotionally and physically. he called it an "unnecessary amputation."
circumcisions, usually performed on newborns, aren't common worldwide and have ebbed recently in the united states where about 60 percent of boys now get the procedure compared to 90 percent in 1970.
the american academy of pediatrics now takes a neutral stance on the issue, leaving it up to parents.
critics of circumcision call it a human rights violation and unnecessary, while those in favor say it is healthy for males.

an arizona town harked back to its wild west past by deciding a deadlocked election with a deck of cards. thomas mcguire and adam trenk each won 660 votes in an election last month for a seat on the cave creek council. a recount was considered too expensive and insufficiently entertaining. instead, town leaders invoked a 1925 local statute that calls for such eventualities to be settled by a game of chance. previous deadlocks have been decided by gunfights but the pair opted to draw cards instead. at a ceremony at the local town hall on monday, george preston, cave creek's judge, selected a pack of cards from a stetson and shuffled it six times. mr mcguire, 64, a retired teacher who has served two terms on the council, drew the six of hearts. he was beaten by mr trent, 25, a law student and newcomer to cave creek, who got the king of hearts. "originally, we thought of settling this with a paintball fight but that involves skill, and skill is not involved in this," said vincent francia, cave creek's mayor. mr mcguire, who moved to the town 10 years ago from suburban new york, said he knew cave creek was different when he went into a bar and found a horse inside. in japan, a game of scissors, paper, stone is occasionally used to settle an impasse. unable to decide himself, takashi hashiyama, a prominent industrialist, forced sotheby's and christie's to play the parlour game in 2005 to decide which should auction an £11 million art collection. source
choosing outfits for work, nights out, dinner parties, holidays, gym and other activities means the average female will spend 287 days rifling through their wardrobe. the biggest chunk of that time is used up picking a killer ensemble for friday or saturday nights out or selecting the right clothes for a holiday. experts found on average women spend 16 minutes every weekday morning deciding what to wear and around 14 minutes on a saturday or sunday morning. a spokesman for clothes giant matalan, which compiled the results after polling 2,491 women, said: "what you wear has a direct impact on how you feel about yourself and it is important a woman feels exceptional in her outfit. "whatever the occasion your clothes portray an image and we understand this is fundamentally important to women." the study - which was based on an adult lifetime from the age of 16 to 60 - found most women will spend around 20 minutes deciding what to wear before hitting the town on a weekend night. week nights out can take up to 20 minutes a time too. deciding on what clothes to take on holiday uses up to 52 minutes each time. while on holiday, ten minutes a morning will be taken up trying to find an acceptable outfit with another ten minutes spent picking evening clothes. on top of that dinner parties, christmas parties and black tie events - at around 36 minutes a time six times a year - adds up to three and a half days. the study also found on average women will try on two outfits each morning before coming to a final decision. and one in two women spend 15 minutes the night before work working out what to wear. source no word on how long the typical woman spends in the bathroom.
dave mackie is running an online sudoku competition where his luxury home in lancashire will be given away as a prize. he has already received thousands of entries around the world, but will let his 'koi' pick the winner from the correct entries. the insurance broker and puzzle fan plans to install a touch sensitive pad in the pond and when the fish touch it one of the 14,000 entries will be selected. he hopes this will mean the fish select someone who will look after them when he moves out- though given it is random they are just as likely to end up with a cat lover. dave said: "as well as being beautiful and majestic creatures, koi have an aura about them and are very perceptive and sensitive to what is going on around them. "they are the ideal symbols of love and friendship and i have no doubt they will pick the right winner someone who will get on with the neighbours and someone who will look after the fish themselves." once they've paid a gbp50 entry fee, entrants complete an online sudoku puzzle to receive a place in the prize competition to win the stylish detached home, complete with sauna and steam room, on lancashire's picturesque fylde coast. puzzle fanatic dave, a director of an insurance broker, has proved that what he is doing complies with uk law as it is a prize competition relying on people's skill to crack the sudoku and not gambling. dave, 49, explained: "i think a 14,000-1 chance of winning this house is a great opportunity for someone." the contest will run up to feb 1, 2010 or until dave has 14,000 entrants. source

there was a snail who decided he wanted a drink.
he went into a bar and made his way onto the bartop and proceeded to ask the barman for a whisky.
the barman being somewhat of an aggressive fellow said "get lost your a snail. the snail again asked for a whisky the barman refused to serve him the whisky. the snail said "but i want a whisky please."
the barman again refused his request and said "i told you i am not serving a snail with whisky and promptly grabbed hold of the snail and threw him out of the bar and into the street as far as he could and went back about his business.
a year later in the same bar there appeared on the the bar a snail, who said to the barman "what did you do that for?"
