ted talks: misha glenny investigates global crime networks
do the crime, wear the sign! this was totally unedited and converted straight from tv.
one photographs the scene as another tries to figure out what sort of person would commit such a heinous crime.
sometimes, hollywood screenwriters run out of ideas. no, it’s true. but it’s a good thing that there’s a wealth of real-life drama for them to cull from — otherwise we wouldn’t have a genre as fine as the true-crime drama. yes, true-crime — it’s the only genre that features scenes of violence so utterly perverse that they couldn’t have come from anywhere but real life. so here, in no particular order are ten of the best. the french connection (1971) cast: gene hackman, roy scheider true crime: the title refers to an infamous drug-trafficking scheme, in which the majority of heroin consumed in the us was smuggled in from france via turkey in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. jimmy “popeye” doyle (hackman) and sonny “cloudy” russo (scheider), are based on real-life nypd detectives eddie egan and sonny grosso, who broke up an organized crime ring in 1961 and seized 112 pounds of heroin, a record at the time. apt adaptation: the french connection won a slew of awards, including the best picture oscar, a first for an r-rated movie, and it’s widely considered to have the greatest car chase sequences in film history. all of this comes as no surprise: it’s a film about copious amounts of heroin, dubious police practices and the french. can any three things be more enthralling? plus, the bad guys win.
dog day afternoon(1975) cast: al pacino, john cazale true crime: this robbery-gone-wrong-flick-with-a-twist was inspired by a 1972 brooklyn bank robbery perpetrated by gay lovers john wojtowicz and salvatore naturile. fuelled by the couple’s inability to fund naturile’s sexual reassignment surgery, wojtowicz, naturile and another man attempted to rob a brooklyn bank and held seven employees hostage for 14 hours. in the end, wojtowicz was arrested, but naturile was killed by the fbi during the final moments of the incident. apt adaptation: this 1975, sidney lumet film is an adaptation of p.f. kluge's life magazine chronicle of the incident, and it’s considered one of the best films of the 1970s. al pacino’s bravura performance and the clever screenplay make it essential viewing for anyone who considers themselves a fan of film — let alone crime films. you’ll be yelling “attica! attica!” at the first available opportunity.
goodfellas(1990) cast: ray liotta, robert de niro, joe pesci true crime: martin scorsese’s seminal gangster opus is based on nicholas pileggi’s biography, wiseguy, which told the life of henry hill, a mob informant. hill served the lucchese crime family throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s to varying degrees of criminal severity. murder, robbery, extortion, jail time — you name it, hill’s done it. he eventually turned in evidence against his “family” and went into hiding as part of the witness protection program. apt adaptation: scorsese, de niro, liotta and pesci are at the top of their game here. at times funny, at times disturbing, goodfellas has some of the most memorable depictions of mob life in film. particularly iconic is pesci’s chilling “am i a clown to you?” scene, in which the razor-thin line between busting balls and stabbing someone in the neck with a fork is deliciously blurred.
donnie brasco(1997) cast: johnny depp, al pacino, anne heche true crime: donnie brasco (a.k.a. joseph d. pistone) was an undercover fbi agent who infiltrated new york city’s bonanno mafia family over five years. chosen for his sicilian heritage, pistone became close with the bonanno captain dominick “sonny black” napolitano and was schooled by family soldier benjamin “lefty guns” ruggiero. pistone’s performance was so convincing that he offered official membership in the mafia, commonly known as being a “made man,” and his work led to more than 200 indictments and more than 100 convictions. apt adaptation: it’s johnny depp as pistone and al pacino as “lefty” ruggiero, how can it be anything but awesomeness? but some historical inaccuracies may tick-off true-crime buffs — particularly ruggiero’s slaying of nicky santoro, as santoro is alive and well to this day.
capote(2005) cast: philip seymour hoffman, catherine keener, true crime: hoffman inhabits the persona of famed american writer truman capote in this biopic that documents the creation of capote’s seminal non-fiction novel, in cold blood. the book itself documents the 1959 quadruple murder of the clutter family, which was committed by perry smith and richard hickock. capote personally interviewed residents of the small-town of holcomb, kansas, where the crime was committed, and the two men in prison as research. apt adaptation: the real-life capote was a man of opposites: he was 5”2 but had a larger than life personality; he was a literary genius with an unparalleled knack for intimate detail yet he was an unapologetic media whore. those are the kind of qualities screenwriters salivate over when creating characters. so, his translation into film was inevitable. for his efforts, hoffman was awarded the oscar for best actor.
chicago(2002) cast: catherine zeta-jones, renée zellweger, richard gere true crime: this double-murder rumpus was based on the real-life crimes of jazz-era killers beulah annan and belva gaertner. in 1924 annan shot her lover, harry kalstedt in the back while in her and her husband’s bedroom. annan watched him die for over two hours as she drank cocktails and played a foxtrot record called “hula lou.” gaertner was a twice-divorced cabaret singer who shot and killed her lover, walter law, and later claimed that she was too drunk to remember what happened. apt adaptation: there’s nothing like a good tale of two women scorned to offset hollywood’s slew of saccharine romantic comedies. add to that the jazz hands a fine bob fosse production serves up, and there’s no reason why this wouldn’t make a stellar movie-musical. the academy obviously agreed: chicago was awarded six oscars, including best picture.
police in eastern england are looking to god for help with catching vandals and burglars.
the lincolnshire branch of the christian police association is setting up a "prayer watch" scheme to alert christians to local crimes.
as well as encouraging worshippers to keep an eye out on their churches and each other, the police said the idea would allow christians to use prayer to help catch criminals.
"it's largely geared to protecting congregations and church properties which are pretty vulnerable places, but with the added bolt-on aspect of prayer," a lincolnshire police spokesman said.
retired london policeman don axcell, the national executive director of the christian police association, said god did answer crime-busting prayers. axcell wasn't specific with proof.

rachel reports on the possibility of the bush administration being prosecuted for war crimes. jonathan turley weighs in.
summer of sam(1999) cast: john leguizamo, mira sorvino, adrien brody true crime: david “son of sam” berkowitz terrorized the bronx in the summer of 1977, going on a killing spree that targeted young couples making out in their cars — and he was allegedly compelled to do it because of his belief in satan and because of his friend’s dog, who he believed was possessed by an ancient demon. berkowitz confessed to killing six people and wounding several others, but the nypd reopened the case in 2004. apt adaptation: spike lee’s unfairly maligned ensemble film chronicles life in the bronx during the infamous spree killings. the director manages to convey the blazing summer heat as well as the tension and claustrophobic fear new yorkers felt during that unsettling time.
blow(2001) cast: johnny depp, penélope cruz true crime: “boston” george jung started out as a pot smuggler during the ‘60s before being sold out and arrested with 660 pounds of marijuana. during his 26-month jail term, jung met players in the colombian cocaine cartel. with jung’s know-how and connections, cocaine became a huge hit in the ‘70s and ‘80s. the blow king was arrested in 1987, testified for the state and went free, but after trying to “go straight,” he was arrested again in 1994 for dealing. he is set to be released from prison in 2014. apt adaptation: depp delivers a powerful performance as the highly affable jung and the supporting cast — particularly paul “pee wee herman” rubens as jung’s california connection — hold their own. not surprisingly, blow is probably one of the best depictions of cocaine’s rise from an esoteric and obscure substance to north america’s party drug of choice.
from hell(2001) cast: johnny depp, heather graham, ian holm true crime: this thriller offers its theory as to the identity of famed serial killer jack the ripper. active in the later half of 1888 in the slums of london, ripper’s murders involved the mutilation of prostitutes: typically, the victims’ throats were cut, their bodies slashed and, in some instances, internal organs were removed. apt adaptation: the mystery surrounding the ripper’s identity has spawned an entire subset of people known as ripperologists. with attention on killer and his identity still ripe, a cinematic take on events was only the next logical step. unfortunately, from hell was a little too heavy on the malarkey. a highly fictionalized account based on alan moore and eddie campbell’s graphic novel, this box-office stinker was denounced by both moore and campbell, and critics largely panned it for the liberties that it took with their material.
monster(2003) cast: charlize theron, christina ricci true crime: monster is based on serial killer aileen wuornos’s harrowing murders. a prostitute at the time of the killings, wuronos was executed in 2002 for the murder of seven men in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, all of whom she claimed raped her. apt adaptation: hollywood has produced a number of movies based on male serial killers. that precedent made the idea of a movie based on a female serial killer all the more intriguing. wuornos was a complex character, alternating between self-proclaimed states of sanity and insanity, victim and aggressor. her psychology made for a compelling character and was captured brilliantly by charlize theron. theron was justly rewarded: she walked away with the oscar, the golden globe and the screen actors guild awards for best actress.
meet the new favorite baptist preacher and christian radio deejay, 58-year-old tommy tester of bristol, virginia. he was just hanging out at a car wash, in tennessee, drunk and high, wearing a skirt, “relieving himself in front of children,” with an open bottle of vodka and an empty oxycodone prescription sitting in the car. oh, and he was “offering police officers oral sex.” you can just imagine the cops pulling up to haul off the preacher pervert and their utter disbelief when, instead of showing any shame or denying everything, he offers to suck them off. wow. wonkette has been unable to determine his specific job title with the rudy giuliani campaign. source: wonkette.com
