good magazine's hidden cost of war. (same magazine that did the awesome "internet porn" video)
no one on television expresses their disgust and dismay with the current state of american policy like jack cafferty. on the heels of the pentagons request for an additional $99.7 billion for military operations in iraq, he challenges us to reflect on the incredibly high cost of this war — in both life and treasure — and ask ourselves what those sacrifices are achieving.

the cost of curbing the soaring emissions of harmful gases that are blamed for causing global warming has been estimated at $1 trillion by a major study of the cost of climate change.
the volume of emissions of the gases that cause global warming will double by 2050 unless rich countries agree to take significant policy steps to cut energy use, it shows.

fort pierce — upset at the rising cost of crack cocaine, a 46-year-old man accused of smashing up part of a local business and “challenging people to fight” tuesday was arrested, according to a police report released wednesday. a manager of dixon's food mart on avenue d told police a man later identified as gus young jr. came in the store about 9:20 p.m. tuesday and smashed a counter partition and dvd case. as police were on the scene, the store manager pointed to a man on a bicycle in the parking lot and exclaimed, “there, he's back! that's him!” young smelled strongly of alcohol and was “challenging people to fight,” the report states. “when young calmed down, he said he was upset that the price of a rock (crack cocaine) had gone up to twenty dollars from ten dollars,” the report states. "young claimed he swung his fist at a drug dealer in the store, but the drug dealer ducked and young struck the partition and dvd case instead of the drug dealer.” young was arrested on charges including criminal mischief and disorderly intoxication. at the jail, young continued yelling about “how unfair the price of crack had become” and told detention deputies, "stanky (expletives)! i brought me a ten and they're twenty tonight!” source
fancy paying $10,000 for a few odd grams of tea? that’s how much enterprising chinese folks are willing to dish out for puer (or pu-erh) tea, a coveted tea type that is renowned for its exotic taste and healing properties. part of the allure of puer tea comes from the strict definition surrounding this tea type. its most prominent feature is the aging process where older raw leaves are in higher demand and said to taste better. the claims of puer tea having health benefits like aiding weight loss and lowering cholesterol levels also add to its appeal. in addition to this, chinese authorities only recognize yunnan-grown tea as authentic puer tea, thus increasing the value of material from this particular province. the reason for these restrictions are largely due to the puer tea boom of 2007. at the time, investors went wild buying these teacakes which inadvertently lead to an influx of fakes. subsequently, the craze fizzled out in 2008 and the authorities started implementing regulations around puer tea in order to retain its value. as a result of these developments, aged puer tea from yunnan can fetch a hefty amount. typically, a kilogram of puer teacakes can sell for 200 yuan ($30) but price can reach exorbitant amounts if the leaves are older. as a matter of fact, century-old tea can reel in an impressive $10,000 for 10 grams. recently, 3 grams of puer tea dating back to qing dynasty was auctioned at the starting bid of 200,000 yuan (close to $30,000)! source
a multi-million dollar restoration project will expend $24,000 to reconstruct a "historic toilet" on the first floor of a 1912 courthouse, authorities said.
cameron county commissioners voted tuesday to allocate the money for the restroom, which will be constructed in its original location and style. the room was removed during a previous renovation to allow the installation of an elevator.
renovation began in 1994 on the building, which is a historical site overseen by the texas historical commission. the commission gave the county a $3.1 million grant for renovations and all construction must comply with specifications set forward by the group.
the $24,000 will pay for a toilet, fixtures, plumbing, plaster and mosaic tile that are true to the original style of the 1912 lavatory, the brownsville herald reported in its wednesday editions.
the project is about 80 percent complete and should be completed by march, authorities said.
what a good use for $24,000, yeah right....
