article submitted by master911. spanish police said today they had detained a man who received a parcel in the mail from venezuela containing a dinner set that was made with 20kg (44 pounds) of cocaine. the 35-year-old was arrested as he received the package containing the 42-piece dinner set made up of cups, plates and bowls at his home in barcelona, police said in a statement. the package was sent to barcelona from maracaibo, venezuela's second-largest city, via london in the middle of february. police suspect the man had been recruited by a venezuelan drug trafficking gang to receive the package which he was supposed to hand over to members of the group who would then extract the cocaine from the dinner set. barcelona has been the scene in recent days of several creative attempts to smuggle cocaine into spain, the main entry point for the drug into europe. earlier this month police detained an ecuadorian woman at barcelona airport who tried to smuggle liquid cocaine hidden in spray cans of products to starch clothes or clean glass into spain. police also arrested a 66-year-old chilean man at the airport at the beginning of the month after discovering that his broken leg was supported by a "cast" made out of cocaine. source, clickity here for video
madrid (ap) — air pollution has long been a fact of life in spanish cities, but scientists now say it is not just smog that chokes people as they walk to work or stroll through the park. a new study has found the air in madrid and barcelona is also laced with at least five drugs — most prominently cocaine. the superior council of scientific investigations, a government scientific institute, said on its web site thursday that in addition to cocaine, they found trace amounts of amphetamines, opiates, cannabinoids and lysergic acid _a relative of lsd — in two air-quality control stations, one in each city. the group said the findings would be published in the u.s. journal analytical chemistry. despite the findings, the council said there was no reason for alarm. "not even if we lived for a thousand years would we consume the equivalent of a dose of cocaine by breathing this air," scientist miren lopez de alda said in a statement. the scientific group stressed that "in no case should these levels be considered representative of the air in the two cities." it said the tests were done in areas where drugs were likely to be consumed. in madrid, the test site was close to a ruined building believed to be frequented by drug dealers. and in both madrid and barcelona, the studies were carried out close to universities. the group said the study showed higher concentrations of the components on weekends, suggesting that drug consumption was up in these periods. the research found cocaine in concentrations ranging between 29 and 850 picograms per cubic meter of air. a picogram is one-trillionth of a gram. mar viana, another researcher who worked on the project, said the levels were far higher than those found in similar studies in europe. a similar study in italy found traces of cocaine and cannabis in the air in rome and taranto in the south. italy's national research council reported in may 2007 that the maximum concentration of cocaine in rome was 100 picograms per cubic meter of air — it said that was a fifth the legal limit for toxic substances in air — but that even this small amount was reason for concern. according to the u.s. state department, spain is europe's largest consumer of cocaine and hashish. it is also a major transit point for narcotics shipments from south and central america as well as africa. the scientists detected the drug by placing quartz microfiber filters in the air-testing stations. they said the method was new and could help in measuring drug use in towns and cities in a fast and anonymous way. source

fort pierce — upset at the rising cost of crack cocaine, a 46-year-old man accused of smashing up part of a local business and “challenging people to fight” tuesday was arrested, according to a police report released wednesday. a manager of dixon's food mart on avenue d told police a man later identified as gus young jr. came in the store about 9:20 p.m. tuesday and smashed a counter partition and dvd case. as police were on the scene, the store manager pointed to a man on a bicycle in the parking lot and exclaimed, “there, he's back! that's him!” young smelled strongly of alcohol and was “challenging people to fight,” the report states. “when young calmed down, he said he was upset that the price of a rock (crack cocaine) had gone up to twenty dollars from ten dollars,” the report states. "young claimed he swung his fist at a drug dealer in the store, but the drug dealer ducked and young struck the partition and dvd case instead of the drug dealer.” young was arrested on charges including criminal mischief and disorderly intoxication. at the jail, young continued yelling about “how unfair the price of crack had become” and told detention deputies, "stanky (expletives)! i brought me a ten and they're twenty tonight!” source

broward county authorities said a grandmother was arrested for hiding cocaine in her bra during a drug raid in oakland park. eight others were also arrested friday at or near the home of henrietta corvin daise, 62. many of them were her grandchildren. jail records show daise posted $7,500 bail saturday. the broward county sheriff's office said deputies conducted a search warrant on her home and found daise with powder cocaine stuffed in her bra. deputies also found 20 crack cocaine rocks, four grams of powder cocaine, marijuana and $1,000 in cash. the eight face various charges including possession and intent to sell cocaine within 1,000 feet of a church, probation violations and marijuana possession. source

"the man had a fractured leg and the 'plaster cast' that was immobilising it was entirely made from cocaine,'' a statement said. he "displayed an open fracture of the tibia and the fibula, and has been transferred to a clinic for an operation. "investigators are examining the possibility that these injuries were brought about voluntarily ... to facilitate trafficking through security checks,'' the statement said. spanish police are particularly wary about so-called "hot flights'' from south america and had their suspicions about this man, which proved to be well-founded. in total, the chilean had 4.85kg of cocaine stuffed in the cans, the stools and forming his would-be "cast'', police said. spain is one of europe's main points of transit for cocaine from south america, mostly from its former colony colombia, the world's top producer of the drug. the country has become the biggest consumer of cocaine in continental europe, and is one of the world's top users of the drug, according to a 2008 un report. source
federal agents have arrested a man on charges of drug trafficking after finding a statue of jesus made of cocaine at a texas border crossing. bernardino garcia-cordova, 61, was arraigned tuesday on charges of cocaine importation, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and conspiracy after an investigation by border patrol and immigration and customs enforcement agents. according to the criminal report filed by u.s. officials tuesday, garcia-cordova offered a woman $80 to transport two religious statues across the border and deliver them to him at a bus station in laredo, texas. a drug-sniffing dog alerted border patrol agents of the presence of drugs in a box that contained two religious figurines. one of those statues, a jesus figure weighing 3 kilograms, was found to be made of cocaine. "this seizure goes to show what extreme measures people will go through to smuggle drugs," said janice ayala, deputy special agent-in-charge of ice's investigations office. the houston chronicle reports that the statue was likely to have been broken apart in water, sifted through a strainer and dried before being bagged and sold. it had a street value of $30,000, the paper said. garcia-cordova, a mexican national, reportedly told officials the jesus figure was destined for a dallas drug dealer named "la araña" or the spider, according to the chronicle. if convicted, garcia-cordova faces between five and 40 years in jail on each charge, as well as a $2 million fine. source, source
oslo, norway - a british woman's bulging wig did not fool customs agents in norway who realized she wasn't just having a bad hair day. the wig was concealing 2.2 pounds of cocaine glued to her head and customs agents detained her on suspicion of cocaine smuggling, authorities said wednesday. the 32-year-old suspect, whose name was withheld, arrived late sunday at vaernes airport near the city of trondheim on a flight from copenhagen, denmark, the customs service said. "the agent thought she had a great deal of hair and suspected that she was wearing a wig," the agency said. "the wig was examined and the agents found a bag of cocaine." norway's largest newspaper, verdens gang, said the cocaine was glued so firmly to the woman's real hair that police brought her to the local hospital to have it removed. kjetil mjoesund, of trondheim police, confirmed that it was glued to her head, but had no information about how it was removed. he said she was taken for a routine medical check. a court ordered the women held until july 15, pending a formal indictment and trial. source
