santiago (reuters) - a chilean prostitute has auctioned 27 hours of sex to raise money for the country's largest charity during an annual fund-raising campaign.

maria carolina became an overnight celebrity in the conservative roman catholic country, making news headlines and appearing on talk shows since she made her unusual donation to the televised charity event, which runs for 27 hours starting on friday evening.

"i've already auctioned off the 27 hours of love," maria carolina told reuters on wednesday, saying she had raised about $4,000. "one of my clients already paid. it seemed like a good deed to him."

adult prostitution is legal in chile. chile's two-day teleton fundraiser is endorsed by television stars and aims to raise funds for poor, disabled children.

speaking about maria carolina's unusual donation, campaign organizer mario kreutzberger said he would not encourage "immoral" activities, but said he would accept her pledge.

"everyone can do what they want, but if someone tells me that they'll do something immoral ... i'm not going to encourage it," kreutzberger, who as "don francisco" hosts the long-running "sabado gigante" program on the u.s. spanish-language univision network, told local media.

but maria carolina, who advertises her services on the internet, defended her money-raising scheme.

"there are people who are going to be donating money that's a lot more questionable than mine," she said. "the only thing i did was publicize it."

pensioner gives everything to charity

an 85-year-old hungarian is living on the streets after giving up his home and life savings to a children's hospital.

joe csarmaz now lives in a cardboard box after selling his house and all his possessions to buy x-ray and heart scanning machines.

he raised £100,000 for the tuzolto utca childrens' clinic in budapest where he used to work before he retired.

mr csarmaz said: "i feel sad for those children who can not live a full life because they are sick. i have lived 85 years, and now i think it is their turn to be happy.

"that is why i do not mind living in absolute poverty, knowing that at least they'll be better off."

the husband continues his story...

"the young woman was very grateful to me and i walked her to the door. when we got to the door she turned around and with tears coming out of her eyes, she asks me: "sir, do you have anything else that your wife does not use?"

charity refuses 'calendar girls' donation

a domestic abuse charity has refused a donation from hairdressers who posed for a nude calendar, claiming that accepting the money would be akin to supporting the sex trade.

scottish women's aid said it could not support the fundraising efforts of the 11 women from alloa, clackmannanshire, because they had posed semi-naked.

but morag hill and katherine cram, who own the hairdressing firm and were the driving force behind the calendar, said they were "deeply offended" by the charity's comments.

ms hill was spurred on by the hugely successful 2003 film calendar girls, starring julie walters and dame helen mirren, after suffering domestic abuse for eight years.

she said: "when i phoned scottish women's aid to tell them that we had a calendar and i needed to know how we could get the cash to them, the woman on the end of the phone said they would not be associated with it.

"she said that they did not support women taking their clothes off to raise money and that they were a feminist movement.

"it made me feel really angry. out of the 11 women who took part in this calendar, five have suffered domestic abuse and they wanted to do something to help other victims.

"we are not members of the sex industry, we are just trying to help."

the 36-year-old, who is now happily married, suffered domestic abuse from a previous partner until 2006. she had to go through months of counselling to rebuild her confidence.

ms hill and her colleagues have so far raised £600 and are aiming to generate 2,000 orders for their calendar.

the women's institute women raised more than £2million for leukaemia research by posing nude.

since their 2000 calendar, numerous causes have taken part in similar ventures as a way of raising funds,

jacqui kelly, a spokeswoman for scottish women's aid, said: "we are a feminist organisation and of course we are happy that these woman feel empowered by what they are doing.

"but we are opposed to the sex industry and we have an issue with women removing clothes. "a calendar of naked women will sell well and we as an organisation are not comfortable with this."
