roman catholic couples are being encouraged to pray together before they have sex.

a book published by a prominent church group invites those setting out on married life to recite the specially-composed prayer before making love.

it is aimed at 'purifying their intentions' so that the act is not about selfishness or hedonism.

the prayer, which appears in the prayer book for spouses, implores god 'to place within us love that truly gives, tenderness that truly unites, self-offering that tells the truth and does not deceive, forgiveness that truly receives, loving physical union that welcomes'.

the 64-page book has been published by the london-based catholic truth society.

the book contains prayers for every stage of marriage and family life, including engagement, planning for parenthood, pregnancy and caring for children and elderly parents.

the prayers, written by a variety of authors, are interspersed with catholic teaching on the meaning of marriage and family.

the book pushes the message that marriage should be exclusive and life-long and condemns abortion.

it criticizes 'those who, in our times, consider it too difficult, or indeed impossible, to be bound to one person for the whole of life, and those caught up in a culture that rejects the indissolubility of marriage and openly mocks the commitment of spouses to fidelity'.

it adds: 'it is a fundamental duty of the church to reaffirm strongly the doctrine of the indissolubility of marriage.'

the catholic church is raising hell over a new book that encourages couples to sneak into church confessional booths and have sex.

in 101 places to have sex before you die , out in november, authors marsha normandy and joseph st james write: "the only sex the church doesn't frown upon is the married, heterosexual and birth control-free kind, so the odds are the pope is pretty displeased with you already.

"instead of carrying all that mortal sin around with you for weeks at a time until you can make it to confession, why not combine both with a quick and tidy 2-for-1 session?"

the book says drawbacks include "splinters, ex-communication, peeping (father) tom".

a spokesman for the church in new york said the book was "sick".

"this is sick stuff and the authors and the book publishers should be ashamed of themselves," new york archdiocese spokesman joe zwilling said.

us catholic league president bill donohue said: "the kind of people who would have sex in the confessional would also have sex in a graveyard. and i don't mean with each other."

publisher of the book, simon & schuster, said the book was supposed to be taken in a humorous light.

"this is one entry in a book that includes 100 other equally facetious references," a spokesperson said.

"we think readers will understand the spirit of the book."

rome (reuters) - one of italy's most popular magazines, the wholesome famiglia cristiana weekly, will apologize to its readers for printing an advertisement which showed a woman's naked bottom, the magazine said tuesday.

the advert caused a storm as it was the first time the catholic magazine, whose title means "christian family," had shown nudity, a common feature in many non-religious magazines in italy in both advertising and editorial content.

"modesty and chastity are important values for us and we are not giving them up," editor antonio sciortino wrote in a message apologizing to readers to be published in the next issue which goes on sale wednesday.

the advert, for a maker of ventilation machines, shows a naked bottom through a misty glass shower door. "if you want to see clearly, call an electrician now," reads the text.

he turned to look. he saw a 7 foot grizzly charge towards him. he ran as fast as he could up the path he looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him he looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. he tripped and fell on the ground. he rolled over to pick himself up but saw the bear right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

at that instant the atheist cried out: "oh my god!..."

time stopped. the bear froze. the forest was silent. as a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky: "you deny my existence for all of these years, teach others i don't exist, and even credit creation to a cosmic accident.

do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? am i to count you as a believer?"

the atheist looked directly into the light, "it would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a christian now, but perhaps could you make the bear a christian?"

"very well," said the voice.

the light went out.

the sounds of the forest resumed.

and then the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together and bowed his head and spoke:

"lord, bless this food, which i am about to receive
