roselle, n.j. - police say a new jersey man who told a cab driver to stop at a bank so he could take out some money failed to mention that he was going to rob it. michael restaino jr. of linden was arrested shortly afterward monday when a roselle police officer stopped the cab he was riding in several blocks from the roselle savings bank. police say the taxi driver was apparently unaware of what his passenger had done. police say they found more than $2,400 in cash and a holdup note in restaino's pockets. they say he was not armed. he has been charged with second-degree robbery and is being held in the union county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. police did not know whether he had retained a lawyer. source

milwaukee police probably wouldn't have arrested adan flores-delgado if he had done just one simple thing: pay for his prostitute's cab ride home. the 36-year-old resident of prospect heights, ill., was arrested at a south side motel last week after police said he and a prostitute he had hired got into a loud quarrel when he refused to pay her cab fare. when officers arrived, they found cocaine powder on flores-delgado's nose and upper lip, about $300 on him and $67,400 hidden in his minivan, according to police and a criminal complaint. flores-delgado already had paid the prostitute $40 for sex, the complaint says. if he had simply picked up the cab fare, he probably wouldn't have attracted attention, said milwaukee police lt. john kaltenbrun, who is supervising the investigation. "why he would go and be so cheap and stupid probably had something to do with the cocaine," kaltenbrun said monday. "you've got to love people, don't you? sometimes they amaze even me." flores-delgado was charged with conspiracy to commit delivery of a controlled substance and obstructing or resisting an officer. he faces more than 40 years' imprisonment if convicted of both charges. kaltenbrun said flores-delgado worked as a "mule," transporting drugs and money for a chicago drug dealer. flores-delgado usually didn't know whether he was transporting drugs or money because other people packed the vehicles he drove, but he seemed to know he was transporting cash when he was arrested, kaltenbrun said. officers noticed something was odd as soon as they knocked on flores-delgado's door sept. 29 at the suburban motel, 4600 s. 27th st. at first, flores-delgado didn't answer, but police could hear him moving about in the room, as if he were hiding things, kaltenbrun said. once they entered, flores-delgado identified himself by a false name and handed the officers an identification card with a third name, the complaint says. officers found several cell phones in the room, kaltenbrun said. plastic bags used to package cocaine were on the floor and dresser, according to the complaint. after a drug dog detected traces of drugs in flores-delgado's 2003 dodge caravan, officers found $67,400 wrapped in cellophane in an interior panel in the van, the complaint says. even though the money was hidden, flores-delgado had plenty of cash to cover the prostitute's cab ride, kaltenbrun said. "he would have had money to pay," kaltenbrun said. "that wasn't the problem."
extreme disciplinary action part of taxi & limousine commission's new approach to curbing driver rudeness new york (cbs) ? there are about 45,000 cab drivers on the streets of new york city, but it's those rude few that make a very lasting impression. one driver was recently fined $1,000 and suspended for cursing. cbs 2 hd has learned the details on what's being done to make sure your next ride is a pleasant one. getting a cab ride in gotham can be interesting to say the least. just ask its residents. "i think they drive like maniacs," said irene bremis of greenwich village. "more than once i feel like i have almost died because the driver is like, 'blah, blah, blah …'" jackson heights resident carolyn kaylor said. "they come off with a real harsh attitude and you're like let me just get to my location and leave," canarsie's jean pyronneau said. some of the more popular passenger gripes include drivers talking on the phone, not speaking english, not knowing their way around, and also giving passengers a hard time when they want to pay by credit card. the taxi & limousine commission receives about 20,000 complaints per year and 20 percent of them are about driver rudeness. "it's a negative reflection on our city when drivers, even when they are stressed out, (are) showing that stress in a very concrete way to visitors and tourists, " said tlc chairman matthew daus. when cabbie zbigniew sobczak got into a verbal altercation with another driver and said the "f" word, he was fined a grand and suspended for 30 days, even though neither cabbie had a passenger at the time. "he curse me. i put a couple of words to him, but … that's it," sobczak said. "we not beating each other." fair or not, the tlc says the punishment sends the message to drivers that they need to mind their manners. "we need them to bite their tongue, basically represent the image of the city that it is now," daus said. cbs 2 hd went along with the tlc's undercover inspectors recently as they looked for violators. they've been taking covert rides since january. if you have had a bad experience or had to put up with a rude driver, go to the tlc web site or call 311. the tlc plans to bring administrative charges against the other cab driver involved in the verbal altercation with sobczak, because of his use of inappropriate language as well. source
