mcdonough, ga. -- henry county police are asking for the public’s help to find a burglary suspect who investigators said also abused a cat.
lee kildare, who stands just three feet 11 inches tall, was caught in the act after getting into a house in newcastle by stepping through a broken door panel. kildare's head was seen by a security guard and police officer poking out of the hole. fiona varley, prosecuting at newcastle magistrates' court, said a security guard spotted the dwarf at 9pm on may 2 and alerted police. she said: "while the pc was liaising with the security guard, a male now known to be lee kildare poked his head through broken panel in the door. "the defendant helped himself through the hole and was arrested." after being arrested, kildare was taken to newcastle's pilgrim street police station. miss varley added: "he was very drunk and said if the police hadn't arrived he would have stolen the copper. "when asked about the scrap metal lying around the house, he said he couldn't remember anything about it but said he probably would have stolen that too." michael crowe, defending, said kildare has a condition called achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism. he said kildare was recruited by criminals because of his condition. "they encourage him to participate in this activity because, as a result of his size, he finds it easier to get into smaller places" he said. the 22-year-old and his accomplices would sell the stolen metal at tyneside junk yards and share the profits. the court heard that kildare had committed the burglary just hours after appearing in newcastle magistrates' court, where he was convicted of a similar offence and given a conditional discharge. kildare, of southern road, walker, newcastle, who lives with his mother, admitted non-dwelling house burglary. he was given a 12-month community order with supervision and told to stick to a three-month curfew between 8pm and 7am. source

police will visit burglary victims within an hour, but only if they are upset or feeling "vulnerable" the government is expected to announce. it could take as long as two days for police to arrive otherwise. the guidelines are among 10 new police "pledges" to be unveiled to the public by home secretary jacqui smith. the pledge will say: "if attendance is needed", the police will "send a patrol giving you an estimated time of arrival. if you are vulnerable or upset, officers will aim to be with you within 60 minutes." it adds however: "alternatively, if appropriate, we will make an appointment to see you at a time that fits in with your life and within 48 hours. "if agreed that attendance is not necessary we will give you advice, answer your questions and / or put you in touch with someone who can help." other pledges include neighbourhood policing teams who are meant to be visible 80 per cent of the time as they patrol the streets. officers should also be at the scene of an emergency 999 call within 15 to 20 minutes. the pledges also include treating the public "fairly", with "dignity and respect" and involving them in local policing issues. miss smith will be hoping the pledges, to be issued across the country by the end of the year, will help restore public trust in the police. complaints against police officers in england and wales have risen to record levels. shadow home secretary dominic grieve said: "this re-hashed re-announcement is typical of a government that has run out of ideas. "on the one hand, it includes policy proposals - such as crime-mapping - copied directly from the conservatives. "on the other hand, attempts to prescribe quotas and response times look like the return of discredited whitehall targets under another name." source

greenpeace may have scored some pr points abroad by exposing a scheme in which crew members of japanese whaling research vessels secretly sold large amounts of whale meat, but their methods have angered some japanese. in order to seize packages of whale meat, members of greenpeace japan admitted to having entered a delivery company’s distribution center in tokyo on april 15th without permission. in total greenpeace found 23.5 kilograms of whale meat, worth 100,000 to 300,000 yen (or roughly $1000-$3000 usd), smuggled by 12 crewmembers of kyodo senpaku kaisha, ltd.
