german police called to a break-in at an apartment in the northern town of itzstedt found the intruder still on the premises and hiding under a kitchen cabinet.
the "cat burglar" had somehow crawled into the ground-floor of the apartment, broken window blinds, torn down drapes and trashed furniture.
police also found fish and fish remains from a broken aquarium scattered around the apartment, said julika reinhardt, spokesman for the police in the town north of hamburg.
two officers finally found the offender, a cat, hiding under a kitchen cabinet but the heavyweight male resisted arrest, biting one officer in the thumb before they both managed to overpower it.
reinhardt said the cat, wearing a name tag, was returned to its owner who would have to pay for the damage.
"no one knows how the cat broke in," she said. "but the damage was considerable."
this is why i own a dog, so i don't have to worry about cat burglars...

a man told police that he set his parents' home on fire wednesday afternoon to chase away burglars he claimed were creeping around the attic. the man, in his 20s, used a torch-like device to try to chase away people he thought he heard in the attic of the north side home on grenadier way, police said. the man ended up setting the roof on fire, but firefighters later extinguished the blaze. no one was injured. officers said no intruders were found in the home and the man could face charges depending on his mental health. "if we (are) able to determine (it was a) drug-induced bad trip, (he will) probably face arson (charges)," sgt. brian custard said. "if this is a mental issue that's ongoing, there's no culpability, so (there) wouldn't be any charges." source: ksat.com
tokyo - how about a little relaxation with your robbery?
a burglar gave a 35-year-old woman a shoulder massage for several hours after breaking into her apartment in central tokyo and tying her up, police were quoted as saying on friday.
he stole 210,000 yen ($1,900) in cash and her bank cash card, though he later mailed the card to her as she requested after withdrawing 980,000 yen from her account, kyodo news agency said.
it said lee jin-se, 29, a south korean, admitted the burglary and told police he lingered in the woman's apartment and gave her the massage "to relax her."
police believe lee waited there until business hours began for bank cash machines, virtually none of which operate around-the-clock in japan, kyodo said.
a police spokesman confirmed the robbery but declined to comment on the reported massage. he said the woman did not appear to have been physically assaulted.

a burglar who broke into a home just east of fresno rubbed spices over the body of one of two men as they slept in their rooms and then used an 8-inch sausage to whack the other man on the face and head before running out of the house, fresno county sheriff's deputies said saturday. lt. ian burrimond, describing the crime as one of the strangest he's ever heard of, said a suspect was found hiding in a nearby field a few minutes later and taken into custody on suspicion of residential robbery. deputies, he said, had no problem linking the suspect to the crime. "it seems the guy ran out of the house wearing only a t-shirt, boxer shorts and socks, leaving behind his wallet with his id," burrimond said. arrested was antonio vasquez, 22, of fresno. burrimond said deputies headed to the victims' home in the 300 block of south thompson avenue near kings canyon road shortly after 8 a.m. saturday regarding a burglary in progress. the victims, both farmworkers, told deputies they were awakened by a stranger applying spices to one of them and striking the other with a sausage. both the spices and the sausage, burrimond said, reportedly were obtained from the victims' kitchen. after the man fled, the victims discovered the home had been ransacked and that some money was taken, burrimond said. burrimond said the money was recovered, but that the piece of sausage used in the attack was discarded by the suspect and eaten by a dog. "that's right, the dog ate the weapon," burrimond said. "i tell you, this was one weird case." source have any interesting articles you'd like to share? article request thread.
a man accused of trying to burglarize a home while naked tuesday stopped in mid-escape to ask the victim for a pair of shorts, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.
the victim threw the shorts to the accused burglar, who then fled, said susan quayle, a spokeswoman for the yavapai county sheriff's department. nickos george kopsaftis was later arrested next door, apparently while trying to steal a car, quayle said. "he was wearing the shorts that were donated to him," she said.
quayle said a man house-sitting for his father found kopsaftis standing naked in an upstairs room holding two rifles belonging to the homeowner. the victim told sheriff's deputies that he got the rifles away from the man, who ran away, but not before stopping outside to ask for clothes, quayle said.
when deputies arrived, they found a pair of wet socks and a pair of wet pants with kopsaftis' wallet and id inside, quayle said. a banging sound from next door led deputies to a car which kopsaftis appeared to be trying to hot-wire, she said.
kopsaftis was booked into the county jail on two counts of burglary and two counts of attempted theft. she said shed didn't know how kopsaftis' pants got wet.

police arrested a man who was allegedly naked when he broke into two homes in golden, colo. early monday morning clinton march, 24, faces charges of burglary, theft and indecent exposure for his odd behavior at the homes, reports cbs station kcnc in denver. ruth, a resident at the first home (who asked that cbs4 not use her last name), said she heard her dog barking and saw her motion light come on. ignoring the impulse to call police, she went outside and saw the suspect standing naked just inside a different door of her home. "i didn't follow my gut instinct," she said. ruth said she regrets she didn't immediately call 911 when she heard the barking. "he was leaning over this (bureau) with a sheet tucked between his legs," she said. "he was within a foot and 1/2 to 2 feet of me when i yelled at my husband and he ran that way." ruth said the suspect then ran to her neighbor's home. "i feel very violated even though the man did not touch me," ruth said. "if he hadn't have heard the dogs, who knows what he would have done." the neighbor, dolores (who also wished to only provide a first name) said she was sleeping when the man came into one of her rooms and started rifling through her things. he then apparently put on her underwear, a nightgown, stockings and a scarf and went into her bathroom. after she got up dolores came face-to-face with the man, who she initially thought might be her grandson. "he was laying across this tub like a stiff board with his head over there (at the tub) and his legs sticking out there (on the bathroom floor)," she said. dolores said she felt like she "had a guardian angel" because the suspect then got up and walked right out of her home. jefferson county deputies arrested him outside the house wearing the clothes. he also apparently took a child's toy from one of the houses. officers said they think march may have broken into other homes and said they haven't recovered his clothes. "this is scary behavior. alarming behavior. and it's certainly the kind of behavior that eventually leads to greater acts of violence," said jacki kelley with the jefferson county sheriff's department. march was arrested in 2006 for indecent exposure and trespassing. he's being held on a $10,000 bond. jefferson county police warned residents in light of the incident to be sure to lock windows and doors to avoid criminals who might be trying to target their home. source

florida — a burglar early this morning clambered over a backyard fence on a quiet block on the city's west side. he picked the wrong house. he made it maybe a couple of steps before rettt the dog, a mixture of rottweiler and doberman pinscher, charged, tearing the intruder's shirt from his back in a growling, ferocious attack. this gave homeowner robert e. thompson, 91, time to jump out of bed, grab his gun, a .38-caliber revolver loaded with hollow-point bullets, and to phone the police. then he went out back to let the guy know how he felt about home invaders. he raised the gun and shouted out in the darkness. he thought there might be three or four of them. he didn't care. "the funny part was i didn't have any clothes on," said thompson, a world war ii veteran who was awarded a purple heart during combat tours in europe. "i was standing out there with a .38 in my hand, and i was stark naked." already terrified of the dog, the burglar, who looked to be no older than 20, took a step toward the nude 91-year-old, and that was it for thompson. "i fired a warning shot," he said, and the burglar froze. "i wasn't going to let the guy get within six or eight feet of me. he spoke only spanish, and i couldn't understand anything he was saying. i think he was more scared than i was, really." and so they stayed that way, the hapless young burglar, who appeared, authorities said later, to be very drunk, and the naked old homeowner, his head cool, his revolver leveled, until palm beach county sheriff's deputies showed up. thompson would've made it out of the whole ordeal completely unscathed if, when the deputies told him to drop the gun, it hadn't accidentally gone off, sending a tiny bullet fragment ricocheting off the concrete pool deck and into thompson's right shin. he barely felt it, but the deputies called paramedics and insisted he get checked out at delray medical center. he was back home by midday, recounting the incident. the burglar, who identified himself as jose pasqual, 26, of no fixed address was booked into the palm beach county jail on a burglary charge. "i have a real bad feeling about these guys. i don't tolerate them. i would've shot him if he kept coming," thompson said. "you've got to protect yourself." source

madrid, spain - a burglar who broke into a funeral home tried to fool police by playing dead, but two things gave him away. first, he could breathe. plus, he wore grungy clothes rather than the sunday best of those settling in for eternal rest. police and the crespo funeral home said wednesday they had no idea what the 23-year-old spanish man was trying to steal in the march 17 break-in at burjassot, a small town just outside valencia. neighbors living nearby alerted police when they heard the front door of the business being forced open in the middle of the night. police officers arrived with the owner, and eventually found the suspect lying on a table in a glassed-in chamber used for viewings of deceased people during wakes, a local police official said from burjassot. "the custom here is for dead people to be dressed in suits, in nice clothes that look presentable. this guy was in everyday clothes that were wrinkled and dirty," the police official said. department rules barred her from giving her name.
