warren, pa. — a small-town newspaper is apologizing for running a classified advertisement calling for the assassination of president barack obama. warren times observer publisher john elchert says the ad appeared thursday. it read, "may obama follow in the steps of lincoln, garfield, mckinley and kennedy!" the four presidents were all assassinated. elchert tells the associated press that the newspaper's advertising staff didn't make the historical connection. he says the northwestern pennsylvania newspaper turned information over to police and that the secret service is investigating the person who placed the ad. a note in friday's paper says the newspaper "apologizes for the oversight." source, source

alexandria, virginia (ap) -- a u.s. citizen was found guilty tuesday of joining al qaeda and plotting to assassinate president bush.
ahmed omar abu ali, 24, of virginia, was a trained terrorist who betrayed the united states because he was intent on "killing the leader of the infidels," u.s. prosecutors said during the trial.
abu ali confessed, but the defense said he was tortured in jail in saudi arabia where he was arrested in 2003. prosecutors said the confessions were voluntary.
the federal jury rejected abu ali's claim that he was tortured by saudi authorities in order to get a false confession out of him.
ali could be sentenced to life in prison after being convicted on the felony charges.

in the process of targeting the dutch royal family a man plowed through a crowd attending the queensday parade with his car in apeldoorn, holland just before crashing into a monument. five people died and at least a dozen were injured in the attack. the suspect later died in the hospital of major head injuries.
