06/06/09 update kung fu and kill bill star david carradine, who was found dead in a bangkok hotel room yesterday, might have died from a botched attempt at auto-erotic asphyxiation, thai police said. “there was a rope tied around his neck and another rope tied to his genitals, and the two ropes were tied together and they hung in the closet,” lieutenant general worapong siewpreecha told reporters. “under these circumstances we cannot be sure that he committed suicide." auto-erotic asphyxiation is a dangerous practice which was linked to the untimely death of australian pop singer michael hutchence in 1997, who was also found dead in a luxury hotel room. oxygen is cut off to the brain to stimulate sexual arousal, but it is thought to cause hundreds of deaths per year in the united states. source actor david carradine, star of the 1970s tv series "kung fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the thai capital, bangkok. a news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide. a spokesman for the u.s. embassy, michael turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. he said the embassy was informed by thai authorities that carradine died either late wednesday or early thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family. the web site of the thai newspaper the nation cited unidentified police sources as saying carradine was found thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room. it said carradine was in bangkok to shoot a movie and had been staying at the hotel since tuesday. the newspaper said carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on wednesday, and that his body was found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. thursday morning. the name of the movie was not immediately available. it said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room's curtains. it cited police as saying he had been dead at least 12 hours and there was no sign that he had been assaulted. a police officer at bangkok's lumpini precinct station would not confirm the identity of the dead man to the associated press, but said the luxury swissotel nai lert park hotel had reported that a male guest killed himself there. carradine was a leading member of a venerable hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor john carradine, and brother keith. in all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as martin scorsese, ingmar bergman and hal ashby. but he was best known for his role as kwai chang caine, a shaolin priest traveling the 1800s american frontier west in the tv series "kung fu," which aired in 1972-75. he reprised the role in a mid-1980s tv movie and played caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "kung fu: the legend continues." he returned to the top in recent years as the title character in quentin tarantino's two-part saga "kill bill." source, source
a company was producing an english-language movie. in one scene, an exhausted messenger was supposed to dash in, collapse, and gasp out a vital message in swahili. the company even found someone who knew the language. the scene worked beautifully the movie -- until it played in an african town where swahili was well known. a moment of high drama nose-dived into comedy as the panting messenger gasped out: "i don't think i am being paid enough for this part!"

a veteran actor had finally been offered a part, but it was only a single line. at one point in a civil war play, he was to come on stage and say, "hark! is that not the distant sound of artillery?" scornfully, he told his agent he would not dream of taking it, but his agent felt otherwise. "monty, baby," he said, "you havent been on the boards in a ling time and you got to keep your name out there. i admit that this is only a single line, but its a crucial one, and properly delivered, it can do a lot for you. grudgingly, the veteran conceded the point; it meant a little income at least. he hastened out to baltimore, where the play was getting its tryout, and all the way there he kept practicing the line with a variety of readings, trying to determine which was best. our actor arrived shortly before curtain time. while the play proceeded, he was put into uniform and makeup, and this was barely completed when his cue sounded. he rushed onto the stage just as the sound effects man let loose a horrible clatter that sounded like twenty-seven anvils falling in rapid succession-this signifying the distant sound of artillery. at which, the actor jumped, turned, and cried out,"what the hell was that?"

police chiefs in china have been slammed for hiring actors to rob a bank as a training exercise - without telling anyone else. only the director and the deputy director of the zhenzhou police department knew it was a drill - everyone else, including the bank, thought it was a real raid. four 'robbers' rushed into the post office bank, disarmed security and demanded all the people inside drop to the floor. they even snatched a customer's bag containing £20,000, reports guangzhou daily. critics said police officers, unaware that it was a training drill, could easily have used their guns on the fleeing robbers. they were also concerned about the psychological effect on bank cashiers and customers who had been put through a traumatic situation. the four robbers ran out of the bank in four different directions. but within two hours, all had been caught by different police divisions in the city. a police spokesman said later that police didn't have a preset plan for the drill and all timing, location, and method of robbery were decided on the spot. "the goal was to test different divisions' reaction and coordination," he said. source
