a san antonio fast-food restaurant cashier laughed at a robbery suspect and told him to get a job if he wanted money during a failed holdup on tuesday evening. police said the suspect approached the worker and demanded money, but the cashier laughed and apparently didn't realize the man was trying to hold up the place. the suspect then allegedly pulled out a box cutter and demanded the cashier's wallet. the employee complied, but had no money in his billfold. the suspect fled, but was caught by police who responded to the robbery call. san antonio police said the suspect is expected to be charged with aggravated robbery. source have any interesting articles you'd like to share? article request thread.

the search for proof of the existence of ufos landed gary mckinnon in a world of trouble.
after allegedly hacking into nasa websites -- where he says he found images of what looked like extraterrestrial spaceships -- the 40-year-old briton faces extradition to the united states from his north london home. if convicted, mckinnon could receive a 70-year prison term and up to $2 million in fines.
final paperwork in the case is due this week, after which the british home secretary will rule on the extradition request.
mckinnon, whose extensive search through u.s. computer networks was allegedly conducted between february 2001 and march 2002, picked a particularly poor time to expose u.s. national security failings in light of the terror attacks of sept. 11, 2001.
mckinnon tells what he found and discusses the motivation behind his online adventures in this exclusive phone interview with wired news.

tokyo — when yosuke the parrot flew out of his cage and got lost, he did exactly what he had been taught — recite his name and address to a stranger willing to help. police rescued the african grey parrot two weeks ago from a neighbor's roof in the city of nagareyama, near tokyo. after spending a night at the station, he was transferred to a nearby veterinary hospital while police searched for clues, local policeman shinjiro uemura said. he kept mum with the cops, but began chatting after a few days with the vet. "i'm mr. yosuke nakamura," the bird told the veterinarian, according to uemura. the parrot also provided his full home address, down to the street number, and even entertained the hospital staff by singing songs. "we checked the address, and what do you know, a nakamura family really lived there. so we told them we've found yosuke," uemura said. the nakamura family told police they had been teaching the bird its name and address for about two years. but yosuke apparently wasn't keen on opening up to police officials. "i tried to be friendly and talked to him, but he completely ignored me," uemura said. source gotta love iago.

a berlin opera house is encouraging audience members to smoke cannabis joints during its latest production.
the neuköllner opera house says it wants to enhance the psychedelic experience of camille saint-saens' drug opera the oriental princess.
the actors themselves will also smoke pot onstage while the audience mellow out in the stalls, reports dw-world.
artistic director bernhard glocksin maintains that the opera experience will be "improved with a few joints" while the opera house asserts that artistic license will protect it from drug laws.
"it's a test to see just what we can get away with," glocksin said.
in berlin, possession of anything up to 10 grams of cannabis is considered to be "for personal use" and is often overlooked.
but smoking it in public places can be interpreted by law as an offence against the german constitution.

aspen, colo. - fans of hunter s. thompson will get an inside view of his elaborate memorial service in a film directed by wayne ewing.
"when i die" will be shown saturday at the starz denver international film festival. the hour-long movie depicts the creation of the 15-story tower that was used to blast thompson's ashes into the sky at a closed memorial service on his woody creek property in august.
thompson shot himself in his kitchen on feb. 20, apparently despondent over health problems. he was 67.
national and most local media were barred from the tribute to thompson, who is credited, along with tom wolfe and gay talese, with helping pioneer new journalism — he dubbed his version "gonzo journalism" — in which the writer was an essential component of the story.
ewing, who directed 2003's "breakfast with hunter," also shows the planning and governmental approvals that organizers needed in order to honor thompson's wishes for his send-off.
johnny depp, who played thompson in 1998's "fear and loathing in las vegas," paid the $2.6 million cost of the memorial.
and so goes the greatest writer of all time. we will miss you, dr. thompson.
