Video:Fox Turns Real Firings Into Reality TV Show

fox turns real firings into reality tv show

some people will do anything to get on television, including getting fired from a job while the world watches, like in donald trump's "the apprentice."

but what if you were fired not by the donald, not even by your own boss but by your co-workers, peeping over the cubicles surrounding you?

fox's controversial new reality television show "somebody's gotta go" plans to answer the question even if the cost is, as some critics have suggested, far too high.

"this is treating a real-life situation -- one of the most difficult in someone's life -- as if it's a game. that's wrong," john challenger, ceo of outplacement consulting firmchallenger, gray and christmas inc., told "good morning america."

the show will highlight a small business that needs to downsize because of the economy, but instead of the bosses deciding who gets the axe, co-workers must choose who among them has to go. workers will have to defend themselves, justifying their work habits, all leading to a group discussion to determine who gets dumped.

to help make their decision, employees will have access to each others' usually private records including budgets, human resources files and salaries.

according to challenger, such high-profile firings go beyond disrespectful and could even put the axed employee at risk for mental illness.

"telling someone they are losing their job is such a private matter," he said. "that person deserves the respect of not having others to witness it. losing one's job is one of the biggest issues people face in their lives. there is a grieving process. letting someone go in a public way certainly could lead to depression and other sorts of mental health risks."

while challenger believes the show to be in bad taste in general, other critics say it is making its debut at an especially insensitive time, playing on people's fears during a time of rampant unemployment.

internet message boards lit up with outrage over news of the show.

"many of us don't need a reality show for this," one commenter wrote. "we live or lived it."

"how low can you go?" another wrote.

Video:Morphing Gadgets Could Be A Reality

morphing gadgets could be a reality

article submitted by master911.

imagine a bracelet or a watch that morphs into something else when you take it off. perhaps it becomes a phone, or perhaps a small computer screen and keyboard.

researchers are just a few years away from bringing to life revolutionary morphing devices known as programmable matter which can change size, shape and function.

programmable matter, or "claytronics", involves creating devices made of millions of microscopic robots that are to 3d objects what pixels are to a screen.

these devices sound like pure science fiction, but they might be closer than anyone would have dreamed. and that includes jason campbell, one of the key members of the research team developing the technology at the intel research centre.

"it’s a really challenging research vision, but we are making steady progress and we’re now more convinced that we are actually going to do it," says mr campbell.

"my estimates of how long it is going to take have gone from 50 years down to just a couple more years. that has changed over the four years i’ve been working on the project."

the research centres on robotic building blocks, called "catoms" (short for claytronic atoms).

the aim is to make spherical catoms about 100 microns, or one-tenth of a millimetre, in diameter. in that tiny space, based on current computing technology, there is still a lot of room to include a computing device.

"this is acres of space for nanoelectronic circuits," said justin rattner, intel's chief technology officer.

this means not only room for a computing brain, but also data-storage capacity and an array of electrostatic sensors that can interact with neighbouring catoms.

"it may even use photovoltaics (a solar technology) as a power source and include the ability to generate light," mr rattner said.

"you could have a cup full of it, or a tray, and it can be programmed to take on any arbitrary shape. if this isn’t fantastic i don’t know what is!"

while there is a great deal of excitement around the concept, the proof is in the pudding – so how close have they come to creating actual programmable matter?

"we are aiming for spheres eventually, but to make our task easier to start with we took a cross section of a sphere, so we have cylinders," mr campbell said.

"this is really a 2d approach right now," he said.

"we are trying to build a tube that will carry a control circuitry that allows it to move itself around. these tubes right now are about 1mm diameter and about 10mm long. so already we are getting quite small."

but anyone wanting to rush out and buy a catom take note – as with any advanced technology, the first applications are unlikely to appear on the consumer scene.

"in the near term, high value applications might include 3d visualisation in things like medicine, from fundamentally 3d data sources like eye scanners, ct scanners, ultrasound," mr campbell said.

"this would allow practitioners to really examine it, touch it and make a better prognosis for a surgery they are about to do. it would no longer be about looking at slices of that data, but actually seeing in 3d and change in scale."

perhaps before the year 2020, programmable matter will be ready to deliver that bracelet-phone-computer device they dreamed up at the start.

for some people, that may be just a few mobile phone upgrades away. dick tracy, eat your heart out.

Video:Boy's Room Raided -TV Aerial Interferes With Air Traffic Control

boy's room raided -tv aerial interferes with air traffic control

a schoolboy, nickie chamberlain, was surprised when government officials arrived at his bedroom and confiscated his television aerial because it was interfering with planes landing at a nearby airport.

nickie, who is 12, had used the booster device for two years to watch cartoons, music channels and big brother on his 14-inch television.

but three weeks ago an official from the office of communications (ofcom) turned up at his home claiming the £15 aerial was affecting planes landing at luton airport.

according to ofcom, pilots coming into land at the airport had lost contact with the control tower because the faulty aerial was transmitting on the same frequency as the cockpit radios.

the communication problems meant pilots landing their aircraft had to scramble to change the frequency so they could continue to communicate with the control tower.

air traffic controllers first noticed the communication problems on the flight path into luton, which is directly over nickie's house in linslade, beds., on october 6.

an ofcom engineer was sent round to the house and used a handheld device to trace the signal to the small booster aerial sitting on top of nickie's tv.

his father, dhl operations manager dave chamberlain, 46, said he could not believe a tiny aerial could affect aeroplanes flying over his house.

he said: ''we were told pilots flying over the house were losing contact with the control tower as they came into land.

''the engineer was waiting outside the house when i came home from work and told me pilots had been complaining and they had traced the signal to our house.

''i couldn't believe it and at first i thought the engineer was some sort of conman so i had to carefully check his identification and make sure he was for real.

''then we went inside and he followed the signal using a special reader to my son's bedroom and his booster aerial - i was absolutely gobsmacked.''

nickie, who lives in the three bedroom semi-detached house with his dad, brother glenn, 14 and mother erika, 42, said he was shocked to have caused so much trouble.

he said: ''when i found out what happened i was upset because i couldn't watch cartoons or the television for a while - but it's better than causing a plane crash.''

the ofcom representative ordered mr chamberlain to dispose of the aerial in the bin.

a spokesman said they had been asked to trace the signal by national air traffic control after complaints from pilots.

according to the spokesman the problem occurred because the faulty aerial started to malfunction and ''self oscillate'' - sending out a range of different frequencies.

the spokesman said: ''you essentially get a sound much like the screeching you get when you put a microphone too close to a loud speaker.

''the booster aerial was, at different stages, giving off the same frequency as the aeroplane radio and that is why the pilots were losing contact.

''our field engineers regularly work with national air traffic control and were able to trace the signal back to this little boys bedroom.

''this is obviously quite unusual.''

a spokeswoman for the nats said: ''the planes have multiple back-up communication systems and this is not something where any passengers were in any danger.

''obviously safety is our major concern.''

no one at luton airport was available for comment.
