You have to remember these were not Roman Legioners, they came later. The Roman army of this time was just basically a civilian army drawn up in times of emergency basically a quick draft with no preparation ; with the youngest civilians at the front line, more mature at second line behind, and oldest at the 3rd line behind.

^^ although it was Roman culture and tradition at the time for all fathers to train their sons in combat and warfare as part of their upbringing. The Celts weren`t a "professional" army either.
